Ants - Fort Stewart,GA

We recently bought a home and are in the settling in process. This home was vacant for a good while before we moved in, and I did a deep clean to get rid of many cobwebs and dead bug, especially around windows and doors. My husband has sprayed for bugs and since then we have had just a few spiders crawling around here and there. At our last place, I was told that the bugs always come out right after pest control because they are trying to get away, so we haven't given it much thought. We had many ant hills in the yard and my husband had treated them. We haven't really noticed any ants crawling around out there.

Now, it has been a little over a month since we moved in, and in the past 5 days I have found some ants in the house. These are not the little black ants, they are much larger. Each time I have seen them, it has always been just one by itself (no trail or even a secondary ant). We have not seen any in the kitchen, or any are that we have eaten. I have found ants in each of the kids rooms and in the living room. 5 in total, all on separate days and each one by itself. I have just squished them and moved on, but now am curious about them.

Any experience with this large black ant? Should I be worried about infestation?

What can I do next?

I don't give a few bugs much thought - I think they are part of our world and, if you can get past the "ick" factor, they are far less dangerous than most of the chemicals used to get rid of them. I think there are non-toxic things you can use - lots of people do that by creating recipes involving red pepper and so on. Google for ideas.

My main concern would be carpenter ants feeding off the wood in your home - sills, shutters, studs, etc. They are larger ants, but not the only large ant you see. And of course, if you see a swarm of ants with white wings crawling around, they aren't ants - they are hatched termites. But you're only seeing a stray one or two so that's unlikely. Try catching an ant or two in a glass jar or old plastic container and showing it to a professional pest person or two. Also check the yard for dead trees or trees with a dead section - sometimes carpenter ants live in the dead center of a tree and it takes a while for the whole tree to exhibit the signs.

One would hope that major problems would have been caught by the home inspector before the sale, but you never know.

Good luck.

Those are carpenter ants! I would worry. The only time I have ever seen them in my house is when I brought in wood to burn in the winter.

Don't know about your house but mine has a lot of wood in it. No thanks!

You need to have an exterminator come out specifically for them. It is a lot like termites, the exterminator doesn't bring out the big guns unless you see them.

sounds like carpenter ants, although I remember having one or 2 of them at our old house and not having an issue with them. I would take a picture of it, so you can show it if necessary. We have had a horrible time with the tiny ants. What you can try for both types, is get the spray that is supposed to cause a barrier, I think it is Ortho Home Defense. Spray that along your house and in any cracks you have seen. Knock on wood, that is the only thing that has worked for us.

We used to have that in our last house we lived in. We could never figure it out. As it turned out, these large black ants were living in a tree, that was outside our kitchen window. They lived in a hollowed out place in the tree. We sprayed the yard like you said your husband did, and sprayed the foundation and all around the house. We then ended up putting some kind of tar in the hollowed out part of the tree where they were living. It might not have been tar, but it was a black material that you can put in there to stop the tree from sprouting out when you cut off limbs. It looks like tar. Anyway, we never had any other issues after that. Hope you find your problem soon it is annoying!!
