Antibiotic Side Effects

I'm taking antibiotics for an unrelated infection, and now feel like I have a UTI. Seems like cranberry juice, etc., is not the best idea since it's probably just irritation. Is there anything else recommended? TIA

eta: I just read up a bit about yeast infections, and it really doesn't seem like that. It feels like bladder. Recently started acidophilus - don't know how much I should be taking.

What can I do next?

It is a good idea to take acidopholus whenever you are on antibiotics. Antibiotics take all bactieria, both good and bad out of your system and can leave you with another problem. Talk to someone at your local health food store for more advice and look for a good naturopathic dr. They have great insights to making the whole body work together.
Good Luck!

I would just call the dr. and tell him/her your situation. They will likey prescripe something over the phone that you can pick up at your local pharmacy. I had this problem once and tried the cranberry juice. It just kept getting worse and worse, and I really waited too long. Also I would suggest eating yougurt..if you like it...when you go on anitbiotics. It contains natural cultures that help to prevent this problem.

R.,
This could be a yeast infection as they present with a variety of symptoms. What you read about are always the most common sx, not the range of possible sx. You could also be having irritation of the urethra...the tube from the bladder to the outside world. And then there could be a bladder infection. Now , depending on what antibiotic you are on, you may have uti coverage with that abx. Though not all abx cover uti bacteria. So, if you want to try to deal with this at home ...you need to address all the above mentioned areas. Buy OTC monistat and apply twice daily for the possible yeast infection. Take acidophilus 2-3 times daily, eat live cukltured yogurts...I would also recommend cranberry juice and high volume fluids in an attenpt to change the acidity of your urine and flush bacteria respectively. If your sx do not resolve after a few days, or you get a fever,, or things worsen...you may then want to see a doctor.

Hope this works.

I don't know much about antibiotics, but it could be antibiotics as they lower the levels of good bacteria in the body which, I suppose, could cause a secondary infection... but I thought generally that was related to BM's.
Garlic is a natural antibacterial/antiviral herb (echinacea and elderberry are natural antivirals). Specialists generally recommend anywhere from 2-20 cloves a day (a huge range, I know, but it depends on your needs). For general infection, such as bladder) I would recommend taking 1-2 medium sized cloves at night to avoid smelling like garlic - your coworkers will appreciate it... your husband may not ;).
Also, cut WAY BACK on sugar, dairy, and caffeine. Sugar (predominantly speaking of refined beet and cane sugars) feeds bladder infections and lowers your immune system's ability to fight infection, as do dairy products (due to the chemicals and hormones in diary products). Caffeine is an irritant and causes inflammation (also good advice for those with inflammatory conditions/ailments).
Load up on your fresh fruits and veggies! :) They boost the immune system and will help fight infection.
Also, you might try sitting in a warm (not hot) epsom salts bath. This can improve bladder infections too.
I hope that helps... if all else fails, pay a doctor and get a different antibiotic.

If it is a UTI, please forget the cranberry juice, you would have to drink way too much to do any benefit. Believe me I use to get UTI all the time until a pharmacist recommended Cranberry pills. WOW I took them regularly for a year, then stop taking them and never had one again.(I took them that long to get my system back in order) You can get them at Target, I buy the Target brand, they are not that expensive and I would take like 6 of them with lots of water. Like everyone said drink lots of water. The pills are safe and work.
I was on antibiotics for ance for awhile and that is when I got my first UTI, I thought it would be a yeast infection because it made more sense but it wasn't. I think the antibiotic weaken my immune system, I would not recommend that to anyone.

Hi R.,

My doc just recommended cranberry juice for my UTI. Another thing I can think of is probiotics or prebiotics in yogurt - since those can promote healthy bacteria.

R., This very thing just happened to my 16 yo daughter. She was on amoxicillin for an infection in a tooth and got a bladder infection 4 days after starting the antibiotic. The dr. said it was from the 1st antibiotic and put her on a different kind to clear up both infections. She(dr) said that it happens sometimes more common than you would think. If you have a bladder infection, it is important to get it treated right away before it travels up to your kidneys. A. D.

I have heard that some antibiotics can mess with your UT and bowel system and diarrhea is sometimes a side effect too. Drink cranberry juice and LOTS of water...drink until you're sick of it...even when you're not thirsty, just keep forcing the fluids. That'll keep things flushed through. Eat lots of yogurts too because there is something in the active yeasts that is good for your pluming system as well.

There is no problem with using cranberry just for irritation. That can be the first sign you're getting a UTI. I take the cranberry extract supplements (much more effective and I skip all the sugar in juice which actually can worsen a UTI) just like suggested on the side of the box at the first sign of any UTI issues and haven't had a full-blown UTI in years. Your acidophilus should also have suggested use guidelines. Your doctor/healthcare practitioner may also have advice. Hope you feel better soon!

IF it is bladder related eating blueberries helps. Blueberries inhibit bacteria from being able to cling to the wall of the bladder thus helping you flush bacteria out. So lots of water too. If it is a yeast infection you may need a prescription like diflucan. Next time you take an antibiotic start yogurt or the probiotic right away to help prevent yeast overgrowth. Good Luck!
