Another Iphone Question; Data

My daughter wants to take advantage of my husbands discounts with Verizon. She is looking at an iphone 4. I am concerned about the amount of data and not sure if 2GB is enough. Verizon is already pretty expensive, so to add on additional GB might be a deal breaker. What kind of usage is normal for 2GB?

My husband and I will probably do a family plan with her & jump on the iphone bandwagon too since I already am a Mac user. If we don't use all of our own GB is it shared amongst the other cell phones?

Also we are going to Disney World in May. I have heard great things about iphone apps for Disney. If you have any insight on this, please share.

In our area, AT&T and Sprint are just not worth it due to their coverage. We have been with US Cellular for 15 yrs and absolutely love them. If they had iphones, I would not even consider leaving.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone. I had no idea you could set it to not use data if you have wifi access. Yes we have wifi at home so that will be a huge benefit. Thanks for all the info.

Do you have wireless internet in your home? You can set the iPhone to use wifi and then it doesn't use data at all. And if she can access wifi at other places (friends' houses, Starbucks, etc) she won't be using data either.

I don't believe family lines can share data.

Here's a great presentation on how much 2 gb is, in terms of emails, web pages, etc.: http://www.washingtonpost.com/business/economy/how-much-i...

Most favorite app for Disney is Mousewait. Love Love Love it! I have the Disneyland one as I am closer to that park and that's the one we go to but they have one for Disney World. It's free!

Data, it really depends on what you use it for. GPS takes up a ton of data as does using SIRI. You Tube etc also uses a lot of data, but it's more if you're uploading then watching things. Tell her to wait until she's on a home computer to watch the "must see" videos and the like to cut down her on the go data. One thing my husband does is when he's at home he leaves it on wifi so he doesn't use data at home. He only uses data when we're out and have no access to wifi. He has 2 GB and never goes over it by using wifi whenever possible. I have an older plan of unlimited data that was grandfathered in so I'm keeping it but I don't use a whole lot of data myself and it's rare that I turn my wifi on. Things use a lot less data then you think they do. I think 2GB should be fine.

With Verizon, the GB are not shared among phones. You have to buy them all separably and if you don't use all of your GB, it's not rolled over to another phone.

Both my husband and I have 2GB plans and we've never gone over. We both check our email multiple times a day and surf the Internet when we have random questions, but that's about it. If your daughter wants to download video she'll need more than 2GB.
