I read on here earlier that vanilla extract and water will keep mosquitoes away, but what about fleas and gnats?! We have fleas in our room, not mamy, but enough to annoy you! A long forgotten banana was found recently and has brought lots of little gnats all around the kitchen table. I have put all kitties outside and tried vacuming the fleas and have cleaned the table and keep fruit in the refrigetator, but they keep coming around! Any thoughts on how to get rid of these pests with something easy and cheap? Thanks for yalls help!

with gnats, you can put vinegar, water, and dish soap in a cup together (attracts them to it since they like it so much) and the soap coats the wings so they can't fly out and they just die in there.

for the fleas... you have to treat the cats, the home interior and the outside otherwise, you get repeat infestations.

Go to your local Vet, and they usually have flea treatments for the home and animal.

You have to treat ALL areas and the pet at the same time.
Or the fleas will not go away.

Put water with a little bit of liquid dish soap in a bowl on the counter. This helps greatly with gnats, but I'm not sure with fleas. If they're all over, I would put a couple of bowls out. It's cheap and an easy fix! Good luck!

Go to your local farmer's co-op and ask for diatomaceous earth. The crystals in this powder make small abrasions in the exoskeletons of the fleas and they dehydrate and die. This works for household infestations, but you still need to treat the animals with a spot-control medicine or at the very least a bath in flea shampoo.

Salt helps with fleas. Just ordinary table salt you use to season your food. Sprinkle in your couches, mattress, carpets etc. I would leave it for a little bit and then go back and vacuum. It's worked for my friend's mom for years! She as 4 dogs and lives out in the country so any time they would bring the dogs inside the fleas would hitch a ride!

We had a HORRIBLE flea infestation when we bought our house a few years ago. The pest control company recommended that we vacuum daily and then immediately empty the vacuum cleaner. So make sure that you are emptying the dirt container and then take the trash to the outside can. Or if you have one with a bag, take the bag to the outside can immediately. That way the fleas re-enter the house.

Also, regarding the gnats....you could have "drain flies". They like the moist area around the kitchen and bathroom drains. Pour some baking soda and vinegar down the drain and let it foam up. That might help!

Sprinkle table salt on your carpet and leave it over night and then vaccum. This gets rid of fleas.
