Hi moms...
Ok, so I have 2- 3 year old girls.... They are going through the typical "terrible threes" but one is on amoxiciilin for an ear infection. Since she started taking it she has become a holy terror! What a behavior change. She had this med as an infant but not as a toddler until now. Has anyone had this happen or did my terrible 3's just kick into overdrive???? She is on day 5 and counting!!!!!!! Thanks!

What can I do next?

I would go online to web md or look in the pamphlet that you get with the meds to see if this is a side effect. I would not worry too much unless she has an allergic reaction. my guess is that she is three and may be she does not know how to express if she is fustrated or not feeling 100%. Another thing to do is to call the pediatricans office if she is not feeling well.

Not due to the medicine. sounds more like she might be in a bit of pain, give some tylenol or as I like to refer to it as happy medicine. Try it and see.

Can also be due to divorce and growing up.

My younger daughter used to get very hyper from Tylenol- turns out it was the sugar and dyes used in the flavoring, not the actual medication. Is the amoxicillin mixed with a flavoring (usually they are)...that's probably what's doing it. either that, or she's having stomach cramps (which is common with antibiotics) and doesn't know how to tell you she feels uncomfortable. Find out about taking the amox. with food, maybe. Also, she can take a probiotic (which replaces the "good" bacteria in the kid's gut) or eat yogurt which might calm her down. The only side effect from actual penicillin derivatives my children have ever had is a rash on day 7- turns out she's allergic. Good luck- it's really hard!

I've heard of this, but never seen it. Mostly I've been told that it sometimes makes kids hyper. I guess you got a case of super-hyper-warp speed-overdrive. Thankfully it's only 10 days of disaster -- but try adding extra protein to her diet. It's kind of calming all by itself, and might even out the energy level.

I never noticed any side effects (besides occasional diahrea) from my kids taking antibiotics. She really could still be in pain or just acting out. Three seemed to be worse then two... i wish i would have been told that!

YES!!!!! Call your pediatrician and let him know....my best friend's daughter has this reaction to amoxicillin as well.....turns in to a maniac.

It's not the typical side effect, but doc should be informed.

Good luck!

It could be the medicine or the dye (makes no sense why they put that in children's medicine). Either way, talk to your doctor. Even if (s)he tells you to complete this dose (with most antibiotics you need to complete the regimen to avoid creating super-bugs), it will help to put a note in her chart to try other types of antibiotics for any future problems that she has. There are plenty of choices, it just seems that amoxicilin is the go-to for most docs.

Hi D.,

The side effects are coming from Divorce not the medication.

How are you handling the divorce?

Good luck. D.

Hi D.

I just google searched your question and saw several referrences to amoxicillin causing huperactivity in children. While I can't vouch for the authenticity of the information it does seem that other Mom's have had the same problem. I would call the pediatrician in the morning and tell them what's going on and get their advice about what to do. Kick the amoxicillin? Continue? Is there anything else she can take? Good luck to you.

As a child I took amoxicillin and was fine, but then one day it didn't agree with me anymore. Even though my behavior didn't change, I did have side effects. It turns out I was allergic to it and other penicillin derivatives. Maybe your daughter developed an allergy, too?
