Am I Worried About Nothing??

My son is 2 and for the very first time today he was doing something that scared me. It seems like he is moving his tongue back in his throat, almost like he would swallow it. I thought he was choking but when I probed around in his mouth, there wasn't anything there. Then I thought maybe he got something stuck in his nose but I couldn't see or feel anything when I touched the top of his nose and when I put him down for his nap I could tell he was breathing through both nostrils just fine. Then he would seem to be fine, jabbering and laughing and then he'd make this noise again that sounded like his tongue was going back in his mouth. He got upset with me when I told him not to do it - I was thinking that maybe he discovered he could click his tongue at the top of his mouth and was playing around. When he got upset, he clenched his mouth and stretched his fingers out almost double-jointed and that scared me. But then a few minutes later he was fine.

Could it be that it is a phase or maybe his molars are coming in and it's bothering him? He seemed to have a little bit of a runny nose and when I wiped it there was a smear of blood (that's why I thought something was caught in his nose). Could he be experiencing post nasal drip and it's making him gag? He doesn't have a fever or anything.

Overall, he is very healthy and although he only says about 20 words or so, he clearly understands everything I say to him. He interacts and communicates very well with me and his twin brother.

Have any of you experienced this before? Am I making something out of nothing? (I'm hoping I am.)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone! I believe it is post nasal drip now. In the middle of the night he kept waking up because he got congested. I brought in the humidifier (cool mist) and folded a small blanket to lift his head up a little and he started doing better. Then this morning he's been having a runny nose. It must be allergies because the mucus is clear. I think the one who said that the blood smear could be because he stuck his finger up his nose and I think you're right. This was the first time I experienced this, so I got worried. This is a great website, I would have been real embarrassed if I had called the doctor in the middle of the night. : )

My two oldest have seasonal allergies that cause their throats to itch and they both "itch " their throats by making a sort of gagging pig like noise.. I have no way really to describe it better than that, it could be something as simple as that.. (they are 16 and 14 and have been making this noise forever!)

Sounds like he just discovered something new about his body. Ignore it. When you don't give him the attention he seeks for it, he will eventually stop. Doesn't sound like anything is wrong with him---he is just learning about his body and it is exciting! :) Hang in there~

Yes, you're making something out of nothing.

He's just playing with a new sound or feeling. My 2 year old will find a new noise he can make and then make it for a couple of days. Sometimes he'll do it a couple of times and then start laughing. He's just learning about he world.

If something was wrong, he'd let you know. And remember, he got upset because you were bugging him, not because anything he was doing was upsetting him.

Deep breath....let it out - now another....there you go.....

at this age - they are learning new stuff every day.....

it's most likely post nasal drip...even adults can gag on it. A smear of blood when you wiped his nose? Could be it's getting wiped too often or it could be he stuck his finger up his nose when you weren't looking....

If it bothers you - keep a journal over the next few weeks - if you have a video camera and can "capture" his gag and double-jointed fingers - do...but in the mean time - DO NOT fixate on it and DO NOT make a big deal over it....

Yes post nasal drip can make you gag my boys puke if it's bad enoughl he could also be trying to scratch the back of his throat with his tongue my oldest has been complaining about an itchy throat and ears. Also because of your reaction the first time he might find the noise funny now and will keep doing it or the reaction.

I think your son is fine. Once though my friends child started making strange movements with his head. He was projecting is neck forward. When he went to the doctor it turned out he had swollen tonsils from a virus and he was doing that to allow more air in his lungs.
