Am I Crazy? - Orland Park,IL

I am 18 weeks pregnant with my third. I am feeling VERY little movement and I am nervous. I felt my first at 22 weeks and my second at 14 weeks. I was at the doc 2 weeks ago and he got the heartbeat with no problem. Should I call him to ease my fears? I don't think they would see me unless I insisted. Am I just being paranoid? I have been under a huge amount of stress lately, as my oldest has been very ill, so maybe that is the reason. Any thoughts or similar experiences? Thanks Moms, you are always great.

So What Happened?

Thank you for all your thoughts and experiences. I did go to see the nurse and she found the heartbeat with no problem. She lost it then got it again, so baby is moving. I feel better that I went.

I am 22 weeks pregnant with my 4th, and I didn't really start feeling movement until about 19 weeks. I was like you, because with all of my boys, I felt them MUCH, MUCH earlier. As long as you are feeling something, I wouldn't worry too much. I would assume you have an appointment coming up the the next 2-3 weeks anyway. =)
Good Luck and Congrats!

I just asked my OB this at my 4 month appt. He told me I most likely wouldn't feel any movement until after 20 weeks but sometime between 20-22 and not to stress about it until after then. I had had two m/c's so every little thing worried me. I also felt my son alot earlier so I expected to feel something sooner. I am now in the middle of my 5th month and feel movement all day, although slight, I know its there. Must be a girl ;) Try to relax and know its sort of too early to feel anything for most pregnancies. Position also has alot to do with it, so keep that in mind. I am assuming you have a ultrasound at 20 weeks, keep your chin up and best of luck w/ the pregnancy!

I just had my second and felt movement much later than expected. I had an anterior lying placenta which was why I could not feel the movement right away. Sometimes it could be somethng as simple as this! once the baby got bigger, I felt every kick, punch, squirm....constantly! They should be able to determine the position of your placenta at your 20 week US. If you are feeling nervous still...call your doc as it is always best to follow your gut and ease your mind!

I wouldn't panic too much. I had a similar experience. Turns out, my daughter is just extremely docile. She's now three and just a mild mannered little person. As long as vitals and everything seem ok, it's probably just a change in personalities. Take care!

Don't take any chances. Go see the doc and have them check. It doesn't take much for them to do so and it will give you peace of mind. You will never forgive yourself if something happened or is happening.

However, I am guessing that you are just stressed. It is very early yet and your body changes with each pregnancy. Try to think positive but get into the Doctor TODAY.

Good luck.

A friend of mine felt the same way. And of course this just added stress. She was able to see a nurse rather than the doctor and the nurse got the heartbeat no problem.

Hi J..
I am 8 months pregnant with my first, so I have no other pregnancies to compare this one to, but I did not feel my son move until about 5 months. But if you are nervous, trust your gut and call your OBGYN. Congrats on your pregnancy!

I think if it will help your stress level you should just call them. Tell them that you know things are probably fine but that you are nervous and need some peace of mind. I am sure, if they have any emotions, that they would let you come in with a quick check-up. Just do it and feel better ;)

I know it can be difficult, but just relax. Every pregnancy is different as is every child. I'm sure your baby is just fine. Think of it this way, less movement inside, less outside! This one will hopefully be laid back and easy going. Good Luck and I hope you're able to rest and enjoy your pregnancy!

I am 19 weeks and still not feeling any movement. With my first I felt him around 16 weeks so I have trying to be patient! I know my placenta is anterior so it creates a bit of a cushion which can prevent feeling the kicks until the baby gets a little older.

As an ob/gyn nurse, I would tell you to call your doctor's office and speak to a nurse. It will easy your mind to get some reassurance - and that is what we are there for!!

Good luck!

You may have an anterior placenta- meaning that it is on the outside side of your uterus as opposed to being towards your back. This cuts down on the movement you will feel quite a bit- but otherwise is of no concern. I had an anterior placenta with two of my babies and definitely felt a lot less movement. This is something you can tell from a standard ultrasound if you choose to have one. Otherwise a skilled provider may be able to tell based on the way the placenta sounds and where they hear it.

Otherwise- and I can attest to this- you are probably much busier with this pregnancy and less time to notice things.

At any rate your doctor should see you right away if you call about this. If not it is time to find a new doctor or midwife. Best wishes!

With my daughter, in utero, she was in constant motion; With my son, he barely moved until the very end. With him, the first time I felt a flutter was around 17 weeks. When I was pregnant with him, I would eat a piece of hard, peppermint candy, wait a few minutes and work hard to feel 10 movements, morning and night. He was nearly 10 lbs. at birth.

Of course, NOW, he's almost 11 years old and is in constant motion. Go figure!!!!

Don't feel paranoid - that's why the doctor is there. Any concern that you have should be shared with your doctor, however, this sounds very normal. So sorry about your older son being ill - I hope he is feeling better. That is very stressful taking care of sick kids!!!

I was sooo stressed all during my pregnancy cause I hardly ever felt kicks. Everyday I would feel a kick here and there, enough for me to knwo everything was o.k. but I wanted and needed more to soothe my nervousness. I didn't feel much @18 weeks. The nurse said it's like standing on the ladded of a pool and waiting to feel a ripple from the center. My placenta was also in front instead of toward the back so that accounts for the lack of feeling. If your doctor and his office are cool I would call them or walk in when ever you have worries. Screw pride when it comes to keeping your baby safe. I drove my doctors and nurses up the wall I'm sure. I got my hormones tested, ultra sounds, fetal heartbeat tests, anything to make me feel like everything was alright and of course it was but I needed black and white evidence.

I didn't feel much movement with my first pregnancy due to the placement of the placenta. Even very late, maybe around 25-26 weeks I'd go for a day or longer without feeling movement. It would drive me crazy and twice I was sent to the hospital to get monitored (and they'd instantly find a heartbeat.) My doc said that to encourage feeling movement I should eat/drink something cold and sweet and lie down in a quiet room. Sometimes that worked for me and sometimes it didn't, but it's worth trying.

I didn't feel my daughter until about 20 weeks I think. You probably need to RELAX! Get someone to watch your kids and go lay down on your side (the left I think? It's been a while since I was pregnant so I don't really remember which side.) Anyway, lay down and relax, drink some hot tea and eat some carbs! Mine always moved like crazy right after I ate.
Call your Dr. right away to ease your mind. They get calls all day long from moms, it's their job to take care of you!
