Alternating Formulas

Hi,
I would like to see if somebody has an experience of alternating formulas. I used Enfamil Gentlease for a month and now would like to add Good Start Natural Cultures in order to take advantage of natural cultures and help my baby with gas problems which do not seem to go away with Gentlease.
How do you add a new formula? Should I switch completely and go with Natural Cultures exclusively? Or should I have some sort of schedule: say one feeding is Enfamil, one feeding is Natural Cultures.
Finally, I am also considering Earth's Best Organic Infant Formula. So maybe combining.. Earth's Best and Natural Cultures.
Thank you!

What can I do next?

With my son it was hard to find a formula that eased his gas and discomfort, and it turned out his was lactose intolerant. My doctor recommended that during the transition to slowly introduce one and phase out the other, or if your little one is super uncomfortable to just make the switch...it takes time though, for the little system to adjust. For me, it was about two weeks before I saw a marked improvement in digestion in full. We couldn't use powedered formulas, so my son ended up on Enfamil LactoFree. Since, you are switching brands completely I would just make the switch completely...but, this is probably a good question for your Pediatrician or a Lactation Consultant, as they are very well versed in all things feeding.

Good Luck

I would phase it in slowly. For example..if you are making 4 ounce bottles start with 1 ounce of the new stuff and 3 ounces of the current stuff. Give it a day or two and then make it 2 ounces of one and 2 ounces of the other....etc etc. You will be able to tell in a couple of days if the new formula is going to upset your baby more.

Hi, I just read this article about trace amounts of "melamine" being found in USA made infant formulas.

Here is the link to the article:

We tried just about everything on the market when I lost my milk.

Some were TERRIBLE for us (especially the ones with so-called "gentle proteins". :P They not only made my son various degrees of gassy/ill...the decomposed FAST. I mean, I opened his bottle 15-30 minutes after pouring it and WHEW! What a STINK. No flipping wonder they made him sick. The one with broken hearts on the label was the worst...no kidding...truth in advertising: this formula will break your heart! ;), some were okay, some were great. Our favorite, and what we eventually stuck with was Enfamil Lipil.

Except for the ones that caused violent reactions (that we did a rapid switch OFF of) we took a day or two to phase them in, a week or so of use, and a day or two to phase out/in to the next.

The thing is: Everyone reacts to chemicals differently. I'm talking about the chemicals that are found in foods and medicines (fructose, galactose, all the other -ose's; protiens of various sources/compositions/completeness; lipids, vitamins and minerals & the sources THEY come from; H20...just to list the major building blocks). While Enfamil worked wonderfully for OUR son, it could be awful for someone elses. The trick is to learn your baby's system. Watch for changes & reactions, positive or negative.

So too, if you're using tapwater try switching to bottled if your water is fluoridated. Fluoride should never be taken internally (because it's carcinogenic, more so in fact then cigarettes, when tested in labs), but my Aunt is on the H20 board...and it'll probably never be taken out. Public Health wants it too much, since it has cut down so much on low-income pediatric dental work, the politics will never let it. In any event...fluoride also makes a percentage of the population nauseous, and a percentage of that percentage quite ill (gas, constipation, diarrhea, cramps, headache, etc.)

Oops...I do go on.

Good Luck!

Oh! BTW, I just read in another response about the Melamine and looked it up. Looks like the FDA says "No Contamination".
One less thing. Huzzah.

only stick with one formula once you get switched over or your baby will always have tummy troubles. i love good start formula its really gentle! i had the same problems with my daughter and she could only handle good start. what you need to do is mix it half and half for about a week then increase the new formula and take out the old.
