Almost Two Year Old and the Toilet...

My son, who will be 2 years old one week from today has started telling me before he has a bowl movement in his diaper...he will grab himself and yell STINKY....several minutes later he will actually go. So the other day I bought him a smaller toilet seat that fits over the reg toilet seat and he was THRILLED! He loves sitting on it! When he tells us he has to go, we run to the bathroom, stip him down and put him on the potty. He will sit their for two or three minutes (not doing anything) and then say DONE. Then as soon as we put him in his diaper, he goes poop!

How do get him to understand that the poop goes in the potty and that that is the point of sitting on it? I'm not realy in any rush for him to be potty trained, but it's just frustrating and time consuming and well...maybe that sounds selfish and makes me sound like a bad mother...but I don't really mind him being in diapers. Plus my daughter really wasn't much work at all. As soon as she decided to do it, she just did it and we were done with diapers in a matter of 24 hours.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated ~ thanks!!

M.--Dump the poop from the diaper into the toilet and make a BIG DEAL about how excited the poop is to go down the toilet slide. This was great fun at our house! Don't be frustrated if it takes a while...Good luck!

After he poops in his diaper, take him in the bathroom and dump the poop from his diaper into the potty (easier said then done I know) This helped my daughter relize what in the world I was talking about. Also, after someone else goes poop, you can let her see and maybe flush it down!

This sounds like he'll be ready soon. If he wants to sit on the potty let him--as much as he wants. Soon he'll be going. It sounds like you ar relaxed about it, and I think that is the best way to be.

Yep, already got some pretty good advice about letting him help you dump it in the potty. My daughter and I even wave to it and say "bye bye!"

Yeah i agree with previous poster. My daughter just truned three, and we just got potty training down about 2 months ago. I took the poop out of the diaper and put it in the potty. I used simple words, "poo poo goes in potty, not in diaper". It didn't work real quick, so I started to give her showers to clean her which she didn't like. that may sound mean, but afer trying to potty train since she was 2 and knowing she could go, I was ready.

I've often heard that there is a "window" and if you miss the first opportunity it takes a long time until the next one comes around for potty training. So if YOU are ready too, then I say go all the way with it.
