Almost 6 Month Old More Interested in Other Things than Nursing...

I have been breastfeeding my daughter who is almost 6 months, exclusively since she was born. Well, she is now sitting up, and rolling everywhere, and wants the remote constantly. She wants to do anything and everything except eat! I put her to the breast, and she throws her head back, looking for the cell phone, or the remote. When I say, "Are you hungry?" She'll laugh and latch on for a second, and then sit up and look around some more. The only time she's really interested in nursing now, is when she's sleepy, and she falls asleep at the breast. She's eating her baby food just fine. She just doesn't want the booby! Is this just a phase, or should I supplement more with baby food. I don't want to bottle feed!

What can I do next?

If she is eating fine and enjoying life without the booby, it may be time to start weaning her. Some kids don' want it as much and mom does. Besides, you have done your best and given her your best for about six solid months. If she likes the night time feeding, continue that and maybe one or two others and don't offer her the others as she isn't ineterested. You don't have to bottle feed her unless you want her to have a bit of juice or such. I nursed my daughter till about 8 months. We both got busy doing other things and would forget to nurse. You could always pump for later or use it over her cereal or something.

LOL! i'm going through the same!! but i have two siblings that run around and usually when mine turns she hangs on with her 4 teeth!! but she is getting over it now, i usually let her look and she normally turns back and forth if she is really hungrey she will stay, try a quiet enviroment, if you cant find one then move the phone and remotes to wear she cant reach it anymore. good luck!

My baby also did this; try nursing in a quiet, dark room away from other distractions such as people or pets.

It's just a phase as she's becoming more aware of the world around her and wanting to interact with it. What I found what I had to do with my son at that age was to take him into our bedroom, which didn't have anything he might be interested in and keep things calm and quiet (i.e., no talking on the cellphone yourself, etc.). If I tried to stay out in the family room where his brother might be, he would want to play. Until age 1, breastmilk (or formula) should be the main source of nutrition for a baby, so it's not a good idea to replace too much breastmilk with solids at this point. To compensate until she gets over this phase, I would recommend feeding her as soon as she wakes up in the morning and from naps and as you're doing now when she's sleepy.

This is completely normal! When my kiddos got to this stage, I would just take them into a quiet bedroom to nurse. If I stayed in the living room and my husband so much as coughed, there would go my little one's head (with me still in her mouth!), trying to see what Dad was doing.

Just try a quiet place with no distractions & see if that helps.

Yep, it's a phase - and they go through it a few times. As others have mentioned, some babies are easily distracted. I think my baby, being male, is just interested in the boob, period (LOL)! My little guy is 1 year old and still nurses. They also get more efficient as they get older, so she might be getting more than you think she is. Check out the net for breastfeeding info, and also check out www.askmoxie.com - it's a blog site with lots of good info in general. Good luck!

I completely disagree with it being time to wean!!! Babies never wean before a year on their own. SOunds like I would try a few things.

Babies under a year have to have milk, so I would stop offering solids until she nurses well. Solids at this age are just for fun, not for nutrution. Babies get all the fat and most of the protien they need from brain development from the milk they drink.

If she doesn't nurse well, I would take her to a quiet room for feedings.

This is a common stage babies go through. My baby does it some at 7 months and she isn't even on any solids yet.

I would hold off on most meals until you feel like she is nursing again like she should.

My son is almost 8 months old and does the exact same thing. From what other mommies tell me this stage is normal. I, too exclusively have nursed my son from the very beginning. Lately,I have been pumping my milk and then giving that to him during the day and then also during the "distractable" moments. It works like a charm. I hold & rock him while I feed him. Then we still are able to have the mommy/son time. Good luck! I know the frustration. Keep trying...she will eat when she is hungry.

You should try a nursing necklace. They always entertained my daughter, who would tend to tug and pull so she could turn her head around to see what was going on! OUCH!!! I had two--one I kept at home, and another in the diaper bag. I tried to only wear it when nursing, and that's the only time she was allowed to play with it too. Try this site:
