Allergy to Mosquitos

So, I am allergic to mosquitos. I usually end up on antibiotics when I get a really bad bite because it turns into celuittus (sp?). Yesterday I was out and I was wearing my flip flops and I was sitting on the grass (I am a photographer and was doing a photo shoot) and I got about 7 bites total. But, the one that is making me crazy is on the bottom of my foot. Not only does it itch more than anything, I have this awful stinging feeling that feels like it's going up and through my foot! You can also SEE it throbbing. I have about 2 on each foot, 1 on my arm and 2 on my back where my shirt went up a little when I was squatting trying to take pictures. Also the one on my arm is about the width of a baseball, very hot and very red. I do not scratch them at all. I have been putting calamine lotion on it and also aveeno anti itch cream. I also have the benadryl spray, but I can't find it right now. I did also take some benadryl last night before I went to bed because the one on my arm was getting pretty bad. What else can I do? I mean, my foot is just killing me right now! Is it time to see a dr? I hate to be on antibiotics if I don't have to. What do you think I should do?
THanks!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all! I am feeling much better today, so no dr needed. I will make sure I'm wearing bug spray from now on when I'm out on shoots now. Thanks!!

thanks for the suggestions. I tried some and the swelling has gone down, but it's still pretty warm and red. If it's not any better tomorrow then I'll call my dr. (since it is Sunday anyway). Yes, I do eat healthy. I cook all our meals from scratch at home. I eat a lot of garlic. It has been about a year since I have been on antibiotics. I take a lot of really good vitamins from my holistic dr. that I see every few months for my thyroid. I do have immune system issues. I have hashimoto's (just recently found out a few months ago) but I have been hypothyroid for 4 years now. So, I take a lot of stuff to help my immune system. I also use all natural cleaning products at home. So, I'm sorry, I don't really agree that is has to do with my immune system. When I lived in CA, there were no mosquitos, so moving here I think maybe I just always have to make it a habbit to put the bug spray on. Thank you and I will keep doing the suggestions and see how it is in the morning!!

My daughter has reactions to mosquito bites. Usually a couple Benadryl takes care of the swelling. Sometimes it's two doses before the swelling goes down.

Still, probably best you call the doc!

Feel better!

I think that if this reaction is getting bad enough where your normal, go-to remedies are not helping, then you need to see the doctor. They could also give you a shot of steroids to calm the reaction a bit. Hopefully you don't need antibiotics, but definitely make it a point to discuss with your doctor/allergist how you can best avoid situations like this in the future. Good luck, that sounds awful!

An ice pack could temporarily decrease the itch and swelling, but you should probably see a doctor if the spot is that large. Maybe ask if it's severe enough for you to carry an epi-pen in the future.
I get allergy shots(just for pollen) to prevent future reactions. I don't know if they have something like this for other kinds of allergies.

soak it in epsoms salts

ice pack to keep the swelling down.

doesn't sound like a mosquito bite to me - even with you being allergic to them - sounds like you got bit by a spider to me, especially since it's red and throbbing - very hot and very red...if it's still like that in 2 hours or spread out - go to the ER...you can have hubby draw a line/circle around it now so you can see if it gets bigger and have something to show the doctors..

good luck!

sounds strange i know, but put garlic in everything you are going to eat, mosquitos hate garlic. as for your foot, soak it in some green tea, it will cure the stinging

You poor thing! Sounds miserable!!! Maybe try soaking your foot in epsom salts. When you are able to sit still, put a baking soda paste on the bites. Do you have any friends who are Melaleuca customers? Melaleuca oil is GREAT for bites! Good luck.

Hi C.,

This may sound foreign to you but the healthier you are, the less mosquitos will bite and the less the bites you get will irritate you. Build your immune system. Nutrition is key. If you eat right then your body is not absorbing it properly. (which could be from the antibiotics you've been on in the past...they put a kink in the system for a long time) Get on an absorbable, yes guaranteed absorbable, multivitamin and mineral complex.

There are other things you can do as well. Regular chiropractic care keeps the neurological system ordering your body to do what it is supposed to. Detoxing your home will remove synthetics...which our body is supposed to fight off. Most bodies are fighting so much that they don't have the energy to fight the small stuff. If you are intrigued with any of this, I'll be glad to elaborate. Let me know...

Hope this helps!

I also have strong reactions to mosquito bites.
Make a paste with baking soda and water, put on bites. The cool thing about this remedy is you can easily take baking soda with you or keep it in the car and water is usually easy to find. You can also take a cool bath with about a half cup of baking soda added to it.

You can also make a paste with meat tenderizer and water to put on bites.

Insect venum is mostly protein. The meat tenderizer breaks down the venum. I don't know why baking soda works but it does. I have gotten to the point where I need to keep benedryl on hand in case of bug bites. Not only do I itch and swell but my throat gets scratchy and my sinuses swell.

My experience has been the opposite of Mimi H. When I was a heavy smoker the mosquitos didn't bother me as much. And they never bit my dad and he quit smoking when he was in his middle 30's but continued to chew tabacco (yes yuck), I always joked that it was our Polish blood mixed with nicotine that repeled the mosquitos.

I am late responding to this, but some natural mosquito repellants are: Fabric softener (like bounce) sheets in your pocket
Listerine (spray on door frames, around windows, on deck, etc) and the generic works great.

I have noticed too that when my daughter eats bananas, she gets bitten more. She has a less severe allergic reaction to mosquitos and fleas. Benadryl usually works best for her. The liquid works much quicker than any other form since it doesn't have to digest and go through the blood stream.

I have found that putting deodorant on the bites makes them quit itching. On mine, I usually put a piece of scotch tape over the bite. Something in the glue pulls the "venom" out. (just replace the tape about every half hour until it comes off clean)

Hope you are feeling better. If you are still having problems, I would head to the doctor.
