I've always had TERRIBLE seasonal allergies. Last summer when I was pregnant my doctor told me it was ok to continue to take Zyrtec along with Nasonex (a steroid nasal spray) but I didn't. I read too much information saying that the effects of steroid nose sprays during pregnancy are unknown and it was classified as a C class drug.

Anyway, now the baby is here (yay!) I am nursing and the allergies are back (boo!) anyone know what I can or can't take while nursing? I will give my doctor a call but just wanted to see what other moms thought or have used. thanks!

What can I do next?

I believe Benadryl and Sudafed are approved (check out http://www.kellymom.com/health/index.html) but I'm not 100% sure.

I know of a mom who was just prescribed Allegra and Nasanex and she is nursing. I believe the safest is nasal sprays because they do not enter the blood stream, but you're doing the right thing by calling your doc.

You can also try drinking apple cider vinegar (no experience there but I've heard it recommended many times) and a Neti pot.

Hope you get to feeling better soon and congrats on the little one!

I was able to take Claritin D while pregnant and nursing. Doctor said it was just fine and not to worry about it.

You can absolutely take either or both of those. I use claritin tho because zyrtec makes me want to sleep ALL DAY.

There are very few cold/allergy meds you cannot take - but that is mainly due to the possibility of causing a supply issue for the short term.

I had terrible allergies and didn't want to take drugs.I started taking OPC3 and they are about gone! It's all natural so safe for you and the baby and is a strong antioxidant and relieves inflammation. I always recommend showing the label to your OBGYN to just double check. (you can print it out-right from the site) My friend used to have to use an inhaler for allergies and asthma and has replaced it with OPC.If you want to learn more, you can,at www.marketamerica.com/patterson Good Luck and enjoy the little one!

I was warned that taking allergy meds could effect milk supply , I don't know to what extent, though. I was already having supply issues, so maybe that's why I was given that info.

I took Claratin during my first pregnancy & nursing because of severe springtime allergies. I took Allegra during my entire pregnancy & nursing with my son because of hives. Both are fine to take. I was assured by 3 Dr. & 2 Pharmacists that they were both ok. (I am a little paranoid about taking anything, especially while pregnant/nursing.) Good luck! Enjoy your new baby!

Claritin should be fine. I have used it for two pregnancies and nursed both kids for over a year.
