All in One Cloth Diapers

I have a 11 month old that is already potty train except for naps and night time. I used cloth fitted diapers for nap time but I'm still using disposables for night time. I want to stop using the disposables and I read that "all in one cloth diapers" can work as well as disposables. My baby sleeps through the night and I don't want that to change, so is very important for me to find a cloth diaper that keeps him feeling dry. Does anybody have any recommendations or other suggestions for me?

Thank you.

We're using the "fuzzy buns" brand and really like them. We've been using some cloth, some disposable and just decided to go all cloth since they work so well!

We got some fleece diaper doublers to use at night. It's a rectangular insert that provides an extra layer of absorbency, but one side is fleecy so it keeps him feeling dry. As far as leakage goes, there is no perfect diaper. I have had disposables leak after a long wet night as often as cloth diapers.

Try Fuzzibunz with a couple absorbent doublers (like hemp or cotton)

I love "Bum Genius" cloth diapers. I use them for my 4-month old, so I don't know how they'd be for an 11 month old. There's a special fleecy material that supposed to wick away moisture and a pad that you insert that soaks it all up. At night time you can just double up on the inserts so they soak up more.

They're not AIO's, but I've been using bumGenious 3.0 one-size pocket dipes. We've used them twice for overnight and they didn't leak at all and that was with just the regular liner that comes with them. To me, they feel much dryer when they're wet than Fuzzi Bunz.

We like them so much we just ordered 17 more, so we could have 20 and just use those all the time. :)

Hi! I am so glad to hear about another mom who uses cloth diapers! My daughter is 5 months old and I tried using disposable diapers at night, but haved gone back to cloth all the time. I found that if I use a thinner cloth diaper as kind of a liner it helps keep some moisture off her skin.

G., I just happen to sew diapers for a company that makes all in one diapers as well as many other types of diapers, training pants etc. The owner is very good about answering questions like yours and she has 10 children so she knows what she is talking about. I didn't start sewing for the company until my kids were grown so I never had the pleasure of using these diapers but they are wonderful. I would suggest you check out her website and ask her any questions you have. Just go to snap-ez.com She has great products!

I found that the cloth diapers did not wick away the moisture as well as a disposable, so if your baby is used to disposables I would try gDiapers (cloth outer with a biodegradable liner that wicks away moisture - I found these were my best option) or the Nature Babycare 100% biodegradable disposables. You can buy those at www.coolerchoices.com and the link to gdiapers is there also. Good luck!

We use BumGenius 3.0 pocket diapers, too. They are great. Very soft and because they are lined with micro fleece they don't feel wet. Since we started using them, we haven't had any diaper rash at all and my son has really sensitive skin. They also never leak out at night and he's 20 months. They're pretty easy to wash. I do three wash cycles (2 hot 1 cold) with All Free and Clear. Good luck!

I have to say that I used fuzzi bunz, but they didn't work well for us at night. I loved them during the day, but my girl was a heavy wetter at night, and I could tripple the inserts and she'd still get rashes from the dampness. I ended up just using a disposable at night, because I figured it was just one a day and the "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle" cry of my conscience wasn't as loud as the "RASH" cry of my baby. With my next kid, I'm going to try gDiapers, because I have a friend who is having pretty good luck with them.

I sell and use "pocket diapers", which are like an all-in-one except that you can add extra absorbency for long naps and overnight. They also have a built-in stay-dry liner that wicks moisture away from the baby/toddler's skin. I have a 40 pound 2-year-old and use these overnight without leaks! They are really easy to use and launder. I sell ONLY this style of diapers on my website: http://www.simplecloth.com . If you're only using these for naps and overnight, you would probably need 3-6 diapers and 3-6 extra inserts so that you can double up absorbency for overnight. Please also contact me if you have any questions! ____@____.com I'm here to help :)

We're using fuzzi bunz with our 6 month old and love them. He's just started sleeping through the night, and he's stayed dry. The material closest to his skin is fleece, so moisture wicks away from him into the inserts. For nighttime, we use 1 terry insert and one hemp insert. The hemp ones are great because one side is fleece, so it continues to wick away from his skin. You can get them new from Babyworks in Portland, or used from Craig's list. Good luck!

The best advise I can give you is to go to www.weebunzdiapers.com It is locally owned in Corvallis and she ships amazingly fast for free if over $65. I have called the owner up many of times to ask questions and she has always taken time out to explain differences. It has always been a great experience.

We made the same transition away from disposible at night a couple of month ago when our DS started sleeping on his belly. i tried a few different cloth options and ended up with the bum genius pocket diaper. i use the two insert that come with it then added a third folding in the front to help with tummy sleeping. NO wet diapers in the night! We are also diaper free (mostly) at 9 months! fun stuff! only downside of the bum genius is that it really stinks. something about the microfiber. we started using bac out by bio-kleen which has helped.

Hi G.,

If you are at all concerned about diaper rash overnight (as one other mama mentioned), consider using a fitted diaper with a fleece or wool cover O/N. The fleece or wool is much more breathable than the waterproof material used on the outside of most all-in-ones, allowing the baby's skin to breathe and reducing the risk of diaper rash. In fact, we've found that our son (now 17 months) has *much* happier skin after 12 hours in a fleece or wool cover than he does during the day, when we change his diaper every couple of hours but use a less-breathable cover. And our little guy is definitely a heavy wetter.

With the fitted diaper (we've used Kushies Classic fitteds and Kissaluv ones--but there are a lot of options out there, and it sounds as though you already have some you like), we add either a cotton/flannel liner with a microfleece liner on top (the microfleece wicks the moisture away from the baby's skin) or just a hemp liner (expensive, but nice). For covers, we've especially liked Polar Babies Happy Pants for fleece (the right-hand option at http://polarbabies.com/cgi-bin/diaper/diapercovers) and Stacinator wool covers, though here too, there are a lot of options available. If you go for fleece, you can wash the covers right along with the diapers. If you go for wool, you need only wash the covers once every couple weeks or so, airing them out between uses, but you do need to wash them by hand with special wool-wash (usually Eucalan). We only don't use these covers during our son's awake time b/c they can get compression leaks when he sits (a sign of their breathability!), but we haven't had any problem with that overnight.

You might also check out www.diaperpin.com for user reviews of different diapers, liners, covers, and other accessories--and a FSOT board (on the forums) where you might be able to find used cloth-diapering supplies for cheaper than buying new.

Best of luck!

Hi. I use cloth all-in-ones most of the time. I am impressed that you have potty-trained your 11-month old! Good for you :) I use Fuzzy Bunz and Bum Genius diapers. I add a second insert into the diaper at night for double the absorbancy. I have not had any problems with leaks unless my baby urinates A LOT at night, which happens infrequently. And the leaks only occur because he is lying on his stomach with his knees raised. I hope this helps!

Not sure of your reasons for wanting to go all cloth, but you may be interested in reading Grist's environmental website if you are not already doing so. I get daily emails updating me of international eco news and helping me to learn how to better care for our planet and home. They recently tackled the diaper and said there is no difference between cloth and disposable diapers as far as their impact on the environment.
