Air duct cleaning is a waste of money for most people. The only time you really need it is if you first buy your home and have allergies and the previous owners had lost of pets or were smokers. The other time is if you complete a big renovation because all the dust in there. My neighbor's brother or in law used to work for a company that cleans them. Most of the time, the person could have saved a lot of money and just vacuumed them themselves. He said he had never seen one that was horrible. One was really dusty only because they had completed a full house renovation. You should be able to check them yourself by looking in the take in vents and the output vents in the ducts.

We had ours done when we got a glimpse of the air duct in our house. It had several inches of dust/hair whatever it was on all four sides. My husband does have allergies so we felt this was a good move. A professional can get all the way through with their big high power tools where in our situation, we didn't have access to the entire ducts through the house, where he did. He also cleaned our air handler in our HVAC unit which was visibly corroded so that helped improve the efficiency of our pretty old heater. We only did it the one time and were pleased overall.

Get a peek inside your ducts (take off a return cover and look inside!), then decide. We did ours this year because the previous owners (deceased) had likely NEVER had them cleaned since the system was installed in the early 90's... and they were NASTY! 1200 SF house on one level, around 12 supply registers, 2 main trunk ducts cost us $500 or so. But it left the house smelling SO much fresher.

We remove alk if the vent covers, then attach an old towel to an plumbing snake and dust them. We replace the towel and repeat. We then replace again and spray a cleaner we use simple. Green and wipe them down. We pull all the covers off furnace and if i had an ac unit and vacuum them. Wipe down. All surfaces with cleaner and allow all to dry. Change your filters. Yes this takes about five hours and you have to be careful and take your time but for me it was worth it and is now. Part if spring. And fall cleaning. Alsi remember the coils on the fridge for cleaning and efficiency and any other fans in the house like exhaust fans over stove and in bathrooms for cleaner air and efficiency.

It is very important to clean the ducts, especially if the home is older. There can be mold spores, dirt, dust, animal hair, food, anything. If you have allergies it is best to do this for your own health. Shop around for prices and references, some companies don't know what they are doing, and others are pros. I use to do duct cleaning for a company, it is not easy, but is a good thing to do for your health.
