Hi Mamas!

My daughter is 17mo old and currently goes to daycare 3 days a week and stays with my MIL 2 days a week; we are considering taking her out of DC for a year or so (I just can't find one I'm happy with; we are on a waiting list for a GREAT DC that only takes children 3 and older). Anyway, we have asked a family friend if she would be interested in watching our daughter 3 days a week for around 8hrs/day, either in our home or hers, whichever she would prefer; she also has a little girl, she is 4, and we have told her she is more than welcome to bring her along if she would like. The days and hours would be set, and it wouldn't involve any nights, or chores, or errands. I think a weekly rate would be best; how much should I offer her? I don't want to under pay her, but I also don't want to break the bank. Suggestions?? Thanks in advance!!!

What can I do next?

In my area, the going rate for a nanny is about $15/hour, but only about $10/hour if they have a child to bring. So... I'd say about $10/hour, maybe a little less since you're in KY (which I suspect is a lower cost of living than where I'm at).

I suggest that it might be appropriate to pay the same as you pay the day care center. She'll be getting more personal attention and get to stay in her own home. I'd pay less if it's in her home because she can then do her own chores and won't be paying as much attention to her.

I might add a bit more to her fee and have her do light housekeeping. I've found it natural to do dishes, start dinner, do laundry for my daughter when I've stayed in her home to babysit.

I personally would consider paying her approx. 20-25$a day. My son is in daycare a I pay $100 a week and it's an inhome Christian daycare. But if I had to pull him out for any reason I would pay someone close the same amount. Hope this helps m

Any sitter we've used on a daily basis (adults who watch children daily in-home as their main employment) have asked for $20-$25/day. If she's a friend I'd talk to her to find out where she is on it and then come to terms. She may suggest an amount you find reasonable without you having to worry too much about it.

I was also going to suggest $10 to $12.50 an hour..

I don't believe that hourly rates apply when the care is full day and on a set, reoccurring schedule. That is a very different situation than hiring a babysitter for the night. $20-$25 a day is what I would expect to pay. Around here, half day daycare is $60-$70 a week and full day is about $110 per week.
