My daughter is 4 months old and has been nursing since birth. For the past 9 days she has thrown up after she feeds. I've been to her doctor who said it was a "stomach virus" initially, after that didn't seem to be what it was she put her on Zantac. Zantac isn't helping what so ever. I know she is teething. She constantly has her hand in her mouth and is drooling nonstop. For the first time, last night, I could actually feel the tooth/teeth underneat her gums last night. I'm worried, and I was wondering if anyone out there could help put my mind at ease that maybe this is just a teething issue. I've heard it's possible. Of course if it persists, I'll take her back to her doctor...just wanted to hear if anyone else out there had gone thru this? Thanks so much for any help anyone can offer.

What can I do next?

My daughter did the same thing. We had to change her formula and she was put on Axid. The pedi told us that it would not stop the spitting up (she would continue), but it would stop the throw up. Actually, it was milk, not throw up. They will probably put her on meds first to see if this doesn't slow this down, but if not, it could be the valve like the other lady had mentioned. I was told by my pedi that valve not closing is quite rare, but can definitely happen.

Well my son always spit up after eating when he was a baby- is it spit up (just a bit) or vomit (a lot)- like a tablespoon or two compared to half a bottle's worth? My son actually did both. He always spit up, every day and the vomiting would happen off and on, for no other reason than the same reason for spitting up- I believe he just overate or his little valve just wasn't developed enough (or both). As for it being a teething issue- I don't believe he threw up from teething- he did develop cold symptoms (runny nose, congestion, cough, phlegm, etc) with just about every tooth. I thought he had a cold every month, but looking back I'm pretty sure it was the teeth. Of course, he did vomit sometimes because of the phlegm, so I guess maybe the teething was the cause (of the phlegm and therefore the vomit). Is she congested, (phlegmy)? The odd thing is that she just started this 9 days ago and she hadn't done it before then- if it were an underdeveloped throat valve, you think she would've had it since birth. Do you think she's keeping down enough? Like I said, my son always spit up (like 4 times after every feeding) but he was always in the 50th percentile for weight, too.

Hey N.. It sounds like acid reflux to me which is what my youngest had. I had to put him on soy based formula which helped tremendously. You might want to discuss w/your pediatrician.
Try to keep her elevated for at least 30min-1hr after her feeding which helps as well. Zantac is for the acid and the burning not for the throwing up, That's what my little one took as well. He had acid reflux from age of 7 wks until he was 15 months.

I really don't think it's a teething issue what it does sound like is acid reflux like I mentioned.
I know it's hard seeing your baby go through this and it's so difficult especially being a single mother. I feel your pain.

Just remember that God is watching over you and this shall pass.
I hope you get this under control soon and I hope this helps.

Blessings,
M.

Could be reflux, but it could be a virus. There is a nasty virus that my family has been dealing with - it causes some people to throw up a lot, others have diarrhea, etc. It keeps coming and going every few days around our house. Be sure the baby is getting and keeping enough fluids. Dr can't do anything about a virus but can treat the symptoms and be sure that the child stays hydrated. If long term, then may be more like reflux. If you have to see an ENT, I recommend highly Dr. Timothy Trone at Medical City. He specializes in pediatric ENT cases and deals with reflux issues all the time.

My son spit up a lot during his first few months. I was nursing him and we finally figured out that if I didn't have any dairy, he did much better. I don't know if a dairy problem is what's causing this in your little one, just a thought...

ugh. my son threw up CONSTANTLY up until about a month ago when he turned 11 months old. Zantac won't stop her from throwing up, it only stops the acid in the tummy from burning wehn she does. its her valve at the top of the throat that isn't shut all the way... most likely that is what it is. should be able to tell if it is puke or just the milk coming back up. however, if you are still very concerned, i'd still contact your doc to make sure. nothing wrong with that! peace at mind is so much better!

My nephew had this same thing. He had reflux and it's just something they need to grow out of. Keep and eye on it of course but it's just one of those things that that some little one's are born with. Try to keep her upright for 30minutes after feeding and do not put any pressure on her tummy.
Good Luck/

My son who never spit up or threw up or anything always got everything you could think of when he was teething. He would throw up, get diaper rash, get a small fever etc. The spitting up right after he ate is always what clued me in (once I realized what it was) and then I would have to watch out for the throw up. I will say that I only remember it lasting for not quite a week, but I know it takes awhile for teeth to break through the surface so I would keep an eye on it.

Both of my daughters had the exact same problem...I assume when you say throwing up, she is not projectile vomiting, just spitting up after a feeding. That is what my girls did, and with my youngest (who is now 11 months), it was sometimes up to 7 or 8 times after one feeding. We kept checking her at the doctor to make sure she was still gaining weight, and we did at one time put her on the Zantac, but it only seemed to help a little. The main thing that helped for us was giving her the Enfamil AR lipil. The good thing about it is it doesn't really reduce the frequency of the spitting up, but it makes it a little more solid, so not as much comes up each time. Before, it would seem like a whole bottle of milk would come up, just because it was so liquidy and would go everywhere.

But to get to your question about teething, that is exactly what I decided really made it the worst for my youngest. Whenever she would stop teething for a little bit, she would stop spitting up as much, and whenever she would start spitting up again a lot, I knew a tooth was about to come out.

So to give you some hope, it will get better. My little one VERY RARELY spits up anymore, if at all. And again, it seems to only be when she has another tooth coming in.

Good luck, and have fun washing all those clothes...I have to say I'm very glad to be beyond that finally. :) And you will be, too, soon enough.

If she has not been always spitting up then it is probably teething. My son did that for probably almost a month before he got his two teeth in and then it stopped. Also he spit up a lot when he started to roll around. I think the pressure on their tummy sometimes cause a little spit up (sometimes not so little). If she is on the move consider that as well I would make sure after I nursed him to keep him sitting up for about 15 minute in the bouncy or swing. It seemed to help him so it might work on her. I know how scary this can be, but hange in there it will pass.

I honestly don't really know about a link between teething and throwing up. But the drooling, chewing, etc. can be indicative of teething, and it takes a long time for those little buggers to pop through!

My son has acid reflux, and threw up a lot...turns out he was lactose intolerant. So in addition to the AR, he was not tolerating my breastmilk b/c I was still eating dairy products... Anyway--Zantac did nothing for him either. He finally got on Prevacid solutabs......BIG diference.

Hang in there!!

My daughter threw up constantly for months - big, projectile vomiting that got all over everything! We learned to feed her slowly and to keep her upright, not only while feeding but also for a least a half hour afterward. Also, we had to be careful about how much we fed her, because if she got too much, everything would come back up. What I would do is hold her in my arms in a sitting position, kind of in my lap with her head near my armpit, then afterward, I would VERY carefully move her into a little rocker we had that had toys on it. If I had time, I would just walk around with her or hold her for the thirty minutes. With her is wasn't teething, she still hasn't got any teeth at 7.5 months! Her doctor said that there is a valve in the stomach that sometimes forms late (especially common since she was 6 weeks early), and that until that valve formed, we would just have to deal with it. Well, when she got to be about 5 to 5.5 months old, the vomiting just magically stopped, and we haven't had to deal with it since. That valve may be your daughter's problem as well - Zantac, different formulas, etc. did nothing for our daughter. So, unfortunately you may just have to wait it out. I hope it gets better soon, and I wish you well!

Hi - I too am a single first time Momma, and I remember right around 4 months my daughter started throwing up as well- she was not breastfed, but I think the condition may be similar.. when I took her to the doctor they told me that she was ready for more milk. Or a suppliment... maybe your baby just needs a little bit more or you could mix your breastmilk with formula. Just a thought!!! You are probably right about the teething as well... oh and it worked, my daughter stopped throwing up after I switched her formula.
