Advice on Mixing Water with Formula

My daughter has a severe milk allergy and has been on amino acid formula since she was 6 weeks old. I've been using Gerber Pure water to mix with it since I'm not sure about the purity of my fridge filtered water and concerned about her sensitive tummy. According to my research Gerber Pure is good for infants less than 6 months because it does not have added fluoride or lead typically found in tap water. Boiled or filtered tap water still has lead. However, it comes in 1 gallon jugs that I'm sure are not BPA free or non-toxic (same problem with bottled water). So its a catch 22...any advice from other mom's with sensitive babies who try to lean on the natural side with products?

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

Bottled, boiled or straight from the tap? These are just a few of the choices new moms are faced with when it comes to preparing infant formula. Which is safest? Which is most cost and time efficient? And – most important – does it really even matter? Most pediatricians recommend using purified water, as opposed to natural spring water. Reason being, that natural spring water is likely to contain contaminants that would adversely affect most infants.

“Nursery Water” brand is great and can be found in most grocery stores.

Nursery Water is a purified water with added fluoride that is processed by steam. The water goes through an extensive process of steam distillation to ensure that it is safe and of the highest quality and even has added minerals such as magnesium, potassium, and calcium. They also guarantee BPA free bottles from my understanding.

Good luck with your little one!

speak to your pediatrician. You want to be sure your baby gets the full nutrition she needs.

As someone else mentioned, the BPA is only a problem with the container is heated. She said dishwasher, but don't forget it is a problem in the microwave too.

If you are still concerned, you could buy the water in the plastic container and then transfer it to a glass container to store in the fridge.

Hi,
My daughter has been on amino acid medical formula since she was seven weeks old, and still at age two has allergies so severe she only has one food and her formula. I have used filtered water from home for her since day one and she has always been fine. And we are one of the extreme cases just to give you an idea! :)
I am leary of anything from the store that claims to be purified. As I understand it that water does not have the stringent FDA regulations even city water has. I heard on the news that they were finding all kinds of stuff in water that claimed to be purified because of this lack of regulation. Also I have heard floride in water can cause spots on the teeth.
If I were you I would go with the fridge! ;)
If you have any other questions about living with a child on amino acids, feel free to email me!

I would definitely recommend using filtered water, especially with a child with severe allergies. It is much more cost effective to get a good water filter to use at home for all drinking water than to buy small bottles of filtered water. The plastic bottles only release dangerous chemicals when heated, so don't wash them in the dishwasher or leave them sitting in a hot car.
Also Water Inn sells double reverse osmosis filtered water that has also been ozonated (extra oxygen added) in the large blue containers. There are 7 locations throughout the Dallas area. It might cost you $20-$25/month for your family's drinking water, which is a small price to pay for such an important component of your health.
Good luck with that precious baby!

I used distilled water for my boys until they reached age one. There is no need to worry about the one gallon jugs being BPA free because the problem with BPA is when it's heated, for example when you put Plastic bottles into the dishwasher that are not BPA free then the toxins are released)
