I get kidney stones, and other than drinking a lot of cranberry juice and water, you can avoid other things. You don't want to have too much dairy or things fortified with calcium. Reduce or eliminate coffee and/or soda. HTH

My mother had them and she drank a lot of water! I don't mean the required daily intake of 8 glasses, I mean an 8 oz. glass every half hour. It took her 3 weeks to pass them. Also, if you drink a lot of ice tea, stop drinking it. (per her doctor's advice) Good luck.

Hey A., I am a 30 yr old SAHM who has suffered with kidney stone since my early 20's. My urologist has told me that drinking homemade lemonade or simply water with lemon is the best thing to prevent them from reoccuring. Something with the acidity can help break them down. Unfortunaly your pain will not subside until you pass these ones. Hopefully it happens for you quickly... the average tiume it take sme to pass them is about 2 weeks. You will start to feel and see what looks like sand when you wipe and that is them coming out. The Best of luck to you... I know first hand how bad this can be.

If you're having the same pain again, the thing could be stuck. Sometimes they pass on their own. Sometimes they don't. Only a doctor can tell. Go back to the doctor. Then see a urologist. There is no need to be in agony. If it's small enough to pass out on its own, make them give you painkiller in the meantime.

I don't think there is anything that can be done other than what they did at the hospital. My ex has kidney stones really bad and the only thing he can do at home is take strong painkillers that usually take the edge off but not get rid of the pain. Cranberry juice helps flush your kidneys out so stones won't develop as much but you MUST drink a lot of water and liquids to move the stones out.

I hope this helps you.

Hi Ann!
My poor husband had a stone that was terrible back in June. He woke up with horrible pain, to the point where he was yelling worse than I did in labor! I took him to the hospital, they put him on a pain killer, gave him a CT-scan, and said, "Yep, you've got a stone"...they sent him home and told him to screen his pee until it passed...that night, he was in so much pain, his dad took him back to the ER at 1 am...there they figured out it was embedded in the ureter wall and wouldn't move!! My point is, have they figured out that you definitely can pass these suckers? There's no point in making yourself suffer if a urologist can go in a blast them, or take them out. My husband was home the next morning after the surgery and had a stent put in for two weeks to keep down swelling. We were told to drink tons of water and avoid any kind of "crystallized" beverage, like Crystal Light or Iced Tea. Plus, he was on percocet for a while. I would demand someone check out where this stone is/are and have them removed!!! I hope you are ok!!!!! Take care!!!!!!! We feel your pain (no pun intended!!!!)

I had them once and yes they are painful. I went to my family doctor because he had my urin tested to see why I got them. That would probley help with them returning and maybe they could give you something for when the apin is bad. Doesn't it remind you of child birth? You can also take cranberry pills they sell them with the vitamins. They really help the bladder. Good luck and hope you pass them soon.

Hi Anne Marie -my daughter 23 years old had kidney stones and the hospital told her they would pass. Well she keep getting the pain. She went to a uroligist and he removed them, it is a one day surgry and she could not lift heavy things for about 2 weeks. When she came out of surgry she was like a new woman, and said the pain was all gone. The doctor said that it was to big to pass and that was the only way to remove it. About 1 year later she got another one and she went to the doctor and said just take it out, again no pain after. They can do it two ways by going inside or lazer. Give a doctor a call and check it out. It was the best thing for her. Good luck. Any questions email me at kathy4bearsatcomcast.net

Kidney stones are HORRIBLE. I had my bout with them 2 weeks after my son was born. I remember thinking the pain was worse than the delivery of him. I believe the only thing that gave me relief was the morphine. (Never ever thought I would be thankful for a drug like that) My urologist perscribed a medication for me to take at home that gave me continued relief (can't remember the name of it - I know it was a mild one because I was nursing at the time). Maybe you could check with your urologist - a simple call to his office might work for a perscription. I have been drinking a lot of water & alternating 100% cranberry juice (not coctail) & orange juice (switching each day) I have had no more stones since - over 2 years. If you continue to have more stones you may want to have your thyroid tested. Quite often as we age it stops functioning properly & needs help to keep us healthy. Again your urologist could tell you more about that.
Another thing that mentally helped me was a series of X- rays the hospital took. They showed where the stone was (or how many were left) So I somewhat knew how much longer I had to endure the pain. I got to the point that I could estimate close to the # of hours it would be to the end. I believe the morphine helped so much because it would relax my muscles which helped the stone pass faster.
Hope you feel better soon.

Hi A....this may sound crazy but I heard that drinking beer helps. It makes you go to the bathroom more frequently and will help pass the stone faster. It may be fun to try!!
