So What Happened?

ok, i was jobless for along time over summer just makeing it by with unemployment. my landlords have been very understanding to my situation and have so far not evicted me. my rent has built up so much tho, and yes now im finally working again. "just got my c.n.a" i get little hours and im so far behind it seems impossible to get out. my landlords told me they wanted a "sizable" amount toward my back rent to be paid with my tax income. well, i filed today and with what im getting it wont touch my rent or other bills. ive made it these past 3 years raising my boys and handling our expenses. Ive come too far and have faught to hard to give up now. hoping for some good advice or maybe even a miracle. thank you for your concern!

Im so thankful for everyones concerns and advice threw this tuff time.. to anwser some of your questions.. i did file my taxes at H&R block. They said i didnt make enough to be bale to claim or get large amount for earned income.. that was a huge let down. if i got that money back to catch up on rent with my new job i would be able to afford my reg. rent payments... moveing out is my very last option seeing how my dad and grandpa live right across the street and are a big help with my kids and transportation. my house is paid for, has been for years. my dad and i have always done all the repairs, landscapeing, and fixing up and pay out of pocket. i also have in 3 years never had a lease or anything sighed with my landlords.. im not sure if thats a good or bad thing. i do recieve a small amount of child support for my boys, so that helps with there needs. im going to do some serious research with all the websites and help you all have given me. this has given me a little hope for my kids and myself. thank you again to ALL!!

Welcome to mamapedia!

I am truly sorry you are going through such a tough time!

You need to communicate with your land lords. As far behind as you are, it will be a tough road to catch up. YOU CAN DO IT.

Are your children's dad paying child support? If not - you need to work that and pronto!

With your new certification - CNA - is that nursing or networking? Both can pay well. So that will help out.

For the instant fusion you need now? Go to your local social services office and spill your guts to them. They will help you either get on rental assistance or lead you to a grant program.

If you attend church - go to the church and tell them what is going on. You might be able to get help from one of the parishioners that will be anonymous. There are other charities you can look into - I googled "help single mom who is struggling financially" and this is what I got
http://www.ehow.com/info_###-###-####_financial-strugglin...

Catholic Charities will help you out, even if you are not Catholic.

Go to food pantries in your area to save on food costs so that you can apply more of your money to your bills.

I guess it would help to know how much you are needing...some charities have a limit.

Good luck!!

Did you do your taxes yourself or have a professional do them. With limited income and two small children, you should be receiving Earned Income Credit that would be fairly substantial. Is your ex taking the dependency? Is he allowed to do that this year? Even so, as single head of household, you should receive some Earned Income Credit. Are you entirely sure that your taxes are correct and that you received all deductions and credits that you should? If not, you can still take your taxes to a professional and file and amended corrected return if you were entitled to more than you claimed. If you did your own taxes, it may be worth doing this.

Is your ex paying child support and current? If he is NOT current, you can file with the prosecutor's office to have his income tax refund go to you for back child support vs to him. This will not help with back rent, but you may want to investigate applying for Section 8 housing for help in the future.

you should be able to get housing aid and disability payments, but it may not be possible to stay where you are. your landlord is paying a mortgage, and it doesn't sound as if they have much of a shot of getting back what's already owed them. i second the suggestions to look into section 8.
good luck!

Look for local community organizations that can help you out. Sometimes churchs band together to provide emergenc"y" assistance, sometimes local community food pantries, etc. have "emergency" funds to pay people's rent/mortgage for 1 month.

Hi! I think you might get better help if you could explain how your rent and taxes are associated and how you are currently getting by monetarily. If you already did your taxes than I assume you have income, but it doesn't sound like you have received a formal eviction notice. Even if you could catch up on your rent are you able to remain current? Or do you need to consider moving or taking on a roommate?

If you can get into Section 8 housing, please try. Please understand that your landlord has to pay for the house or apartment regardless of whether or not you pay your rent. You need help right now, but he's not able to give it to you.

I hope you're able to do what Anita B recommends, and get a bigger tax refund. That will help.

If you owe that much, you might be better off moving to a new place. I would start applying for places now, before there is an eviction on your credit report. Maybe you could apply for subsidized housing or find a place thats more affordable for you. The landlord may be willing to forget the back rent if you just move out willingly.

I agree with those bringing up taxes. You should qualify for the earned income credit. I would double check that. You can go into an H&R Block and they can help you with that. You're not obligated to pay if you don't like your results. If you were to get caught up in back rent can you afford the rent as of now? If not then it's probably best to move into a cheaper place anyway, make a fresh start. Good luck!
