I have a 2 year old who loves her milk. She loves it so much that she wont drink anything else. I have tried water, juice, everything I can think of and she will not drink anything but milk. With summer coming up, and it getting so hot, I want her to be able to hydrate herself when milk is not availible. HELP!!!!!!!!

What can I do next?

Hi M.,
I personally never had this problem. Neither one of my boys like milk (3 and 14 months). I do have a niece that loves her milk. My sister-in-law finally just stopped giving her milk except with dinner. It was hard at first but she got over it. My sister-in-law found that she started eating more because she wasn't drinking all that milk. Be careful that your daughter is not filling herself up with milk. Sorry that I wasn't much help. Hang in there.

My 5yr old has always loved his milk. I give my kids milk with breakfast and dinner and thats it. She can't get it by herself, right? With lunch, I let my kids have juice and the rest of the time they drink water. Sometimes I squezze lemon in their water too. Take her to the store and let her pick out a new special cup for water. Try putting lemon in it if that helps and also ice. It may take awhile, but if she is thirsty, she will drink and milk is not that hydrating anyway so its not like she'll be missing out on that. I agree that too much milk would effect her appetite

My daughter is also a milkaholic. Last summer, I got a fun water bottle with a straw (mine happened to be a detroit tigers water bottle) and filled it with ice and water and set it off to the side when we were outside. Whenever my daughter was thirsty, she'd go over and sip cold, cold, cold water out of the bottle. We would also play with the ice cubes on hot days. That was always a hit. There's something about crunching ice on a hot day that appeals to everyone! Of course, my sister would say to tell her she only gets milk at breakfast and dinner, and she needs to drink her water or she won't get any milk later. You could set out three cups of water in the fridge and tell her when all three cups are empty (she drank them, not dumped them out), she can have her milk or some reward. THis is a tough one! Good luck!

M.,
I had a hard time getting my daughter to drink water. She made the funniest faces when she would drink it. My daughter would drink juice though so I put ice cubes made of juice in the water and she would drink that because it had a hint of juice in it! Now I know you can't freeze milk and put it in her water, LOL :). Water is an acquired taste, of course it really has no taste so it's difficult to get a child to like it, but try to experiment with things. I don't let my child drink milk all day only at Lunch and dinner. Juice at breafast and water the rest of time. Make the water and set it out for her, make sure she see's you set it out and then leave it. When she gets thirsty she may try it. That also worked for my daughter. now she drinks water with out any thing in it! L.

You're the parent. You're the one who is in control. You're the one who makes the rules.

Just thought you might like a little reminder :-) I know I forget that sometimes too.

Give her milk at meal times (she does need at least 3 servings per day still) and water between, if she's thirsty enough she will drink it.

When my son was 2, we were going through the same thing. So, I filled my fridge up with bottled waters. He saw my husband and I constantly drinking bottles of water, so he wanted to do what we were doing!! And it worked! He's now 3 and gets his own bottled water out of the fridge. I also buy 100% juice boxes which he loves as well. He has his own drawer in the fridge where I put them. I think giving him a little independence helped out as well. Hope that helps ; )

why not take her out and let her pick out new straw cups that she loves but are ONLY for water. That might work, kids like a little control.
