I'm a single mother buying my first home, I should close in a week. Before I move in I was going to

1. have the locks changed
2.clean carpets
3. pest control

I was wondering if some of you could ask your husbands if they have any advice on moving into a house. I'm sure there are some helpful tips out there, and I figured I'd look for help here.

Make sure the water heater pilot light is on so you can have hot water. Check kitchen appliances and make sure they work. Also, check the heater/AC units.

You've got a good list already.

My advice - Paint any walls you want to now! Obviously, it's much easier while there is nothing in the house but also, once you're in a house it seems much harder to get around to it!

Its sounds like you pretty much have some good things in mind to do before you move in. Is thsi a totally brand new home or has someone lived in it before you? Haave you done a home inspection to make sure everything is working properly? I will be relocating to Palno in a month freom Chicago. I work in the Mortgage business and if you have any other questions or concerns please shoot me a email :)

Peace & Blessings

We hired an inspector since it was possible to miss something important even if we tried hard. Our home was new one, but there was several problems including roof.

You can call the electric company to come and do an efficiency test for you on the house for free, if I remember correctly. They check window seals and stuff for air leaks. To help you save energy, better for the enviroment, save money. I saw it on the news and can't remember the website but TXU does it for sure, doesn't matter who bills you (Reliant, etc.) Hope that helps, if you don't find it let me know and I will try and look it up again. Congrats and good luck! Angela

Hi J.,
Congrats on your new home. When I bought my house as a single woman, one of the first things I did was get a home security system installed. I used Brinks, but there are a number of good ones avail. About $30-$35 a month, and usually around $99.00 to install. If you get one, make sure to get a key pad in your master bedroom. You should also get a carbon monoxide (sp) alarm. One for each floor of your house.

Hi - Did you get a home inspection? Make sure the seller cleans the house - we always do. Ask them if they have all the warranty paperwork or information on the appliances, air conditioner, etc.
Good Luck!

Hi,

We just bought a house (closed on Friday). It's my second house. If you didn't get a home inspection, I would really recommend it. I posted a referral to a great inspector (John with C&C inspections, if you can't find the listing, let me know and I'll email his info to you). He was absolutely wonderful on our inspections and even though my husband has purchased several homes and knows quite a bit, John was really helpful with pointing out things that would need to be done, either right away or annually or both (like pointing out outside windows that needed caulking, or tiles that needed silicone, etc). He charges ~$.10/sqft (so a 2000 sqft home would be ~$200), but it is well worth it. Walk the house with him and tell him what you want and be prepared for it to take several hours - he is very thorough.

Also, remember to check the air filters when you get in. My last house hadn't had the filters changed since the previous owners had moved in... they were furry!

If I think of anything else, I'll let you know.

Happy new home!

P.
