Please no common sense remarks (Obviously, I am going to talk to his pediatrician. Suggestions and alternatives needed)

My four month old has been at daycare for a month now, and I have noticed that the back of his head has a bald spot and is starting to get flat, like he is on his back too much. Just today I tried to touch the spot and he started to cry, like it was uncomfortable or it bothered him. Is this normal? The first three months that he was at home with me this never happened, but then again, he was never really on his back for long periods of time, besides sleep of course. Is it realistic to ask the daycare to not have him on his back? Anytime I put him for "tummy time" he always spits up, even if its been more than an hour after his last feeding.

**Adddition 7/12**The worst part is that I cannot find another daycare for him that has an opening. I want something close to work which is in Grapevine, but nobody has any openings for infants. I touched the back of his head this morning and it didnt bother him. We just had his 4 month appointment, and I would think that his pediatrician would have said something if the spot was a problem. (--Oh, and I know that I am his mother.) I thought that was unnecessary, obviously I would have said something at the time- this happened after the fact. I am just not sure what to think at this point.

So What Happened?

I talked to the director at the daycare and explained my concern. We are going to get him more "tummy time" and when he is asleep, they said they would turn his head to the side. I dont know what more I can do. The law should be only three to one ratio, instead when I go in there there's 2 teachers to 10 infants. Somebody should open another day care in Grapevine/Southlake.....

Victoria,

It sounds like your baby is being left on his back for WAY TOO MANY hours in the day. I am so sad for you and your baby :(
If possible could you stay home or switch care givers??
It is normal for babies to have that little bald spot but it is NOT normal for it to be tender. I second the recommendations to have your baby seen by your pediatrician. And to find someone/somewhere else to take care of your baby IMMEDIATELY.

Regards,
M.

I would totally talk to the daycare about it. They should know better than to put a baby flat on his back for hours at a time, but unfortunately, many of them do this b/c it's easier, etc. If you don't notice a change, I would try a different daycare.
Good luck!!

I wanted to edit this a bit and say that if you decide to switch day cares then let the new one know your concerns and why you left the other one. Denise said it perfectly. And drop in unannounced. That's one thing that will keep them on their toes.

Wow, I would change daycares. I used to work at one when I was in college, and I would change. If it's something that you have to ask them to do, then what else are they not taking care of? If he isn't switched around, he could end up with "flat head" and require one of those helmets...which a friend of mine's son did (for other medical reasons). All that stuff that you are saying is not normal, and I would not leave him in that daycare. Any responsible daycare that actually cares for children should not have to be asked to do something like that. I would also then post the name of that daycare on here. Hope everything with your son goes ok!

Hi Vitoria,
Same feedback as the others. Bald spots are normal, but the soreness is not. I would find another daycare, talk with the current director and makes sure she know why you are leaving. For the potenial new daycare, advise the new director of the previous issues, ask about their policy and drop in un-announced a lot. As a first time mom it's easy to feel like the daycare provider knows what is right and does what's right (since that's their job). But I learned I had to be very specific about what I wanted for my child even if it might require slight changes to how things are normally done. You are a good observant mother...that's what your child deserves. Take care!

On the other hand, a young baby needs to lay flat on his back. Here in America I see baby's in a carseat/swing/bouncer for hours in a row. The baby's here even sleep in a carseat in the living room. In Western Europe that's absolutely not done, baby's back needs to be flat. Tummy time is very important, but that's only a short period of the whole day. (and yes, they spit up, even after 3 hours after his last feeding. That goes away usually around 6-7 months)

But I totally agree with the other lady's, it's not normal the spot is sensitive. Bald at 4 to 6 months is perfectly normal, nothing you can do about that bald spot.

I would ask my doctor first before I would talk to the daycare.

Good luck, I hope it's nothing serious.

I can only tell you this... always go with your gut... if you feel he's not getting the attention he needs b/c he's just being left laying around... do whatever you have to do... to find another more stimulating environment. You never get another chance...

if he's getting a bald spot and he never had one before... they get those because as they get more able to control their heads and they want to look around... My son had one for a brief time... but it went away... But the flat head thing.. if nothing else, call your pediatrician and leave a message to talk to his nurse and get her opinion on it...

If the spot was bothering him at all.. do something ... it's never too late...

I would DEFINITELY bring it up to the daycare that he's getting flat head and they need to rotate him around more... sides, etc.

Don't leave it up to the pediatrician though to say something ... if you're concerned... you bring it up! You're th emom and YOU know best!

I wish you the best of luck... I feel so fortunate to be a SAHM sometimes... and wish I could help you out but I don't know any child care facilities in your area...

Good luck!

I would contact you dr right away and get him seen. My 1 mos old is already on tummy time holding his head up and turning from side to side. Sounds like he may be lying in a crib all day which makes me very sad to think about. You and your little one are in my thoughts and prayers

One thing I try to do with my newborn is turn his head to the side while he is sleeping so that it wont have a flat spot. I just switch sides at different times, as well as let him lie flat. I agree with the others though, it should not be sore to touch. Spitting up when they are on their tummies is frustrating for me too, so instead I hold him on my chest and talk to him so that he will look up, or other things like that. I know that it is helping his head and his muscles. Best of luck!!

Hi Victoria,
Just remember that YOU pay THEM to take good care of your baby. If you have requests, ask away. If they have a problem with this request, you may want to think about moving your baby to another facility. Ther are plenty of other quality places that will hold your baby and give her the attention she needs. My daycare has a one to 3 ratio (sometimes less on certain days). My son gets wonderful care. It may cost a little more but peace of mind is priceless.

Take him to his doctor to have him looked at. Talk to the director of the school and make a complaint about the teacher if it turns out that is the reason. Look for another day care for your son. It seems like his care providers are not paying to much attention to him. All 3 of my girls got a bald spot on the back of their heads(the hair would come off when they slept) but they didnt get a flat head or a sore spot. If nothing gets done make a complaint with Texas DFPS about the day care center.
Good Luck and I hope your son will be fine.
