Advice for Twins

I have 9 month old twins that I still carry around in their infant seats when I go to the store. They are getting really heavy in the seats and I would like to know if anyone has suggestions to make it easier to get around. My husband works out of town so I have to do the grocery shopping by myself with the kids. I've thought about getting a hip hammock to put one kid in so the other can sit in the shopping cart. I've looked at a couple of different carriers but I'm not sure which one to try. I'm going to get the rear facing convertible seats for my car soon and I haven't figured out how I'm going to carry the babies in places without the infant seats. If you have any ideas or suggestions that would be great.

What can I do next?

Hi M.,
I have 10 month old twins and my husband works A LOT, so I totally understand where you are coming from. I just got the convertible seats for my kids so I no longer use the infant ones as well. So here are a couple of things I do. Put one child in one cart and one in the other and push one cart and pull the other. It is really not that hard. Go when the store is not that busy and give them stuff to eat or play with. OR, I use a carrier and push the other one in the cart. OR, they make the carriers for twins. Where you can hold them both, even though thy are 9 months. OR let someone watch one and take the other. I am always available if you need someone. I am a SAHM too, and very bored.

the best thing that i would suggest is a double stroller, where the twins sit sibe by side, or one behind the other. since they are 9 months they are probably sitting up, and sit in the stroller with out the carseat.

I have twins that are now 7 & when my twins were the age that yours are now, I was a single mother. I just switched to a double stroller & took the stroller in shopping. The side/by/side strollers have very "open" bottom bins so I'd toss groceries in there & also onto the canopy & then would check out, it would have been obvious if i was trying to steel something & never had any issues at all. Once they got a tad bigger I'd sit them in the shopping carts that have holes for 2 kids but you're a few months from that.

M.,
I have an amazing hip carrier that crosses on your shoulder instead of your neck - much more comfortable!! It is called Ella Roo (ellaroo.com) Mei Hip.

Good luck, Sam

I am also the mother of twins, who are 10 months old now. I stopped with the infant carriers about 2 months ago because they got too tall. I recomend getting a "hotsling" they are very versatile and my girls love riding in it, I even have a 2 and half year old who still thinks its a great ride. Someone also mentioned sticking them in the shopping carts that have seats for more than one child, these have also become a blessing, we only have two grocery stores in our town and both have car shaped carts that my girls love to sit in and move the stearing wheel, it keeps everyone entertained. Best of luck!

If you get any good advice, I would love to hear it. I am expecting twins in August and have a 2 yo son. I think it will be a great reward, but a lot of work! We are looking forward to it and are trying to get suggestions early on. If you have any suggestions yourself just regarding general life with twins and what seems to work, that would be great! Thanks!

When my twins were younger I must have put a million miles on my stroller. There was a basket under the carrier where I kept the groceries when I shopped. Obviously it won't hold as much as a cart but I felt like it was my only option so I just shopped more frequently. At first I was nervous that I would look like I was shop lifting or something but I was a regular at the store and nobody ever said anything. Also, if you don't have a double stroller yet, don't go for the side by side kind. They are too wide to maneuver. I had the graco duo glider and I loved it.

I don't have twins, but I do have the Playtex Hip Hammock. I like it, but it has a tendency to slide off my shoulder and against my neck which can be uncomfortable. It's good for short trips like the grocery store. I also like that it is big enough for kids up to 35 lbs. I've also heard that the Premaxx brand of carriers are good, but not for petite people (like me).

I don't have twins, but my older two were close in age. I used a double stroller (as somebody else already suggested.) I would push the stroller and pull the cart behind me. In fact, I use two carts now when I have all three kids with me. Another suggestion is to order your groceries online. When I lived in Las Vegas, Albertson's had a delivery system. If you had your order delivered on Wednesday's, it was 10% of your grocery bill which would help pay for the $10.00 delivery charge. I think that they only charged $5.00 if you ordered online but went to the store and picked up your ordered that they pulled for you. At first it took awhile to figure out how to find what I wanted, but after that it was easy and a life saver. I would schedule delivery around nap time or anything else I had going on that day. All you have to do is put them away! I have not seen anything like that advertised where I am now in Utah. So I don't know if that is an option for you, but you might want to give it a try!

My son had just turned 2 when my daughter was born, so I would sling my daughter and then put my son in a backpack/ if I needed to go hands free. But to be honest, what I did the most was just go by myself and let my husband watch the kids!

Hi M.!
How about putting one in a Kelty Kids backpack and the other in the cart? That way, you have your hands free, and the baby on your back can still see the baby in the seat. It's a win win for everyone! I used to be a Nanny for twins and I love to reminice about their awesome relationship with each other. You could also just go to Costco, because their carts have spaces for TWO kids, and then you wouldn't have to go as often because you could buy in bulk!
Good Luck!
M.
