I was told last month that my 5 year old son has ADHD. So I have tired everything changing his diet. Going to even more organic foods. But nothing has seemed to work. So I am going to try to put him on some meds. Just mainly to get him through the school year and so I can go to church service. I am looking for suggetions on what meds have worked for you. I know that not all meds work the same for everyone.

What can I do next?

Hi K.,

Please, please, try homeopathy first! My son, originally dagnosed with a rare immune disorder 4 years ago, is med-free & the healthiest little boy! He used to be on a ton of daily meds that affected his growth & behavior.

Call: Regina Edwards in Dallas ###-###-####

I've heard she has great success with ADD/ADHD kiddos. Try anything to stay away from such altering medications!...that's my motto!

Best wishes!

My DH and niece both use Adderol with improvement in attention and focus, but also experience lack of appetite. ADHD meds can result in stunted growth and can alter your child's personality.

My son is having great results with the following:
* Fish oil Omega 3s and 6s - improved brain function and mental clarity
* Essential oils (Lavander - calming, lemon - improved focus, and rosemary - improved memory)
* Removal of Red #40 and Wheat from his diet. (In most studies, Red Dye # 40 results in severe innattention and lowers IQ scores)
*Zyrtec. Air born allergies were making it hard for him to focus, think clearly, or pay attention.

I wish and your child all the best!

Hi K.,

I am 30 and was diagnosed with ADHD at age 7. I have been on everything from Adderall, Adderall XR, Concerta, Ritalin, Methylin, Stratera,Imiprimean.. (don't think that's the correct sp)I have had it all. The unfortunate thing is each medicine will work differently for each child. So you have no choice but to bounce your kid from med. to med. until you find the right fit. You may see an improvement with all of them but the side-effects will vary with each one based on your child. How old is your son??? I especially hate to see boys take it because it does stunt your growth so badly (I am 5'2 and did not weigh 100lbs until college). I wish more then anything my mother would have tried other options as the many years of taking, well essentially legal speed, has caused heart problems. Some kids grow out of it but some have it for life and if you introduce different ways for your son to handle it it will become habit for him and he will be able to do it on his own should he have it as an adult. Being a single mother it will be much easier for you to medicate him, and like I said you will see an improvement but if you have any support groups or family support then I would suggest doing everything in your power to try anything and everything before medicating your son. The first step is to understand how he thinks and learns so you can help him. I remember in school before my mom knew I had "something" she would tell me I had to sit at the table and could not get up until my homework was finished. People who do not have ADHD do not understand this but those of us who do knows that was the last thing that was going to help me! That was like Chinese water torture! Give your son frequent breaks and be patient with him. Read as much as you can on the subject. Here is a link I read last night www.geocities.com/Athens/oracle/1580/hunters.html

God be with you!

Grapeseed extract is natural and it works. Take one for every 50 lbs. twice daily. At the vitamin shoppe look for the one that says proanthysianidines on the back. It works!! Don't worry its the type that if you take too much you just pee it out. Some vitamins you pee it out if you take to much. Others will stay in your system and you have to be careful.

On the foods - I don't know exactly what you did - but my daughter was on meds for a while - then we found a very low sugar diet worked wonders!!!!! We tested her - she was "borderline" hypoglycemic - so check online for the diets they would use - if thats what you were doing....try domething else - like all the recommendations. The other thing I will say - most often kids & adults are lucky...the meds work. But, with our daughter - I may have the verbage wrong - but most drugs are say hystamine based - she wasn't responsive with them - she was responsive to non - hystamine based. She actually only reacted to that drug - not yet approved for ADD - ADHD!!! So - there are alot of ins and outs when it comes to the meds - and its all just trial & error....

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Have your son examined and evaluated by an optometrist who specializes in Vision Therapy. After 4 years of meds that only drugged her up, our daughter was given vision therapy and the ADHD went away! If a kid can't get MEANING out of what they see, they just flip to something else. She was 2 when she was diagnosed ADHD and 6 when we got the vision therapy. She wouldn't even watch a commercial on TV, but was a normal 1st grader after the therapy. She's an adult today and says that saved her life since she would have had a far different life otherwise.

My son started on Concerta, we raised the dosage 3 times. Then we switched to Vyvanse. We have raised the dosage 1 time. He is now on 50mg. One of the reasons I like the Vyvanse is it is suppose to last a little longer, they say 12 hours. We have recently, at the Dr.'s suggestion; started mixing a little bit of the capsule is about a half cup of water. I have him drink it first thing, right before breakfast. This has helped with his morning school work. I also do not give him the medication during breaks from school.

I am an adult living with ADHD and have learned to manage it unmedicated at this point but while I was in school I was on Concerta. It worked great for me but like you said everyone reacts to medications differently. Talk to your sons doctor and get suggestions then research all the options. My parents chose Concerta for me because it was a time release med which meant I only had to take it in the morning and didnt have to worry about going to the nurses office to take another at lunch.

My son started with Concerta when he was about 8. As he grew up and had less success with that we moved to Adderall XR. Now he's almost 16 and he takes Vyvanse. They all 3 work well and he has had very few side effects. Sleeps great, eats well (just picky picky) and has done very well in school. Good luck!

I would also suggest you use flouride free water and toothpaste, it cannt hurt. Floride can be toxic, read the warning label on your toothpaste about swalloing it. Its banned in most eurpoean countries, it is a substance used in many antidepressants also. Its another unnecessary garbage like mercury in vaccibnes

Many Dr's are quick to label ADD/ADHD and prescribe meds. There are many proven alternatives that can help improve focus and behavior in children. Diet can play a huge role. Do some research on the Feingold diet/Gluten free diet. You've received some great responses about alternatives to meds to consider.

In case you haven't heard of adaptogens, they are a category of herbs that help the human body adapt to stress, support normal metabolic processes, and restore balance. They increase the body's resistance to physical, biological, emotional, and environmental stressors and promote normal physiologic function. A lot has been discussed recently about adaptogens, even Dr. Oz on Oprah.

I highly recommend an incredible book titled Adaptogens: Herbs for Strength, Stamina, and Stress Relief by Winston and Maimes. To watch a video on the history of adaptogens go to www.TunguskaMistNow.com to learn more.

Many parents have had wonderful results using the Tunguska Mist Adaptogen Sprays to help restore balance in their children and improve their focus and behavior. Teachers often comment that the student's grades go from C's/D's to A's/B's.

My husband and I have been taking adaptogens for a long time, and we're passionate about helping people reduce the damaging effects of stress and restore balance NATURALLY! Good luck and God Bless:)

Hi!! I'm a mom w/ 2 ADHD boys and a "Mother hen" for a daughter. I totally understand what you are going thru. I've had the same journey with my 2. The changing of the diet and then trying to find the right dose in the correct medicine. We've tried plain jane Ritlin, Adderall and Concerta. We've discovered Vyvanse and it has been the answer to our prayers!! All the others caused both of my boys not to eat while the medicine was in their systems but when it was out, they would raid the fridge and pantry for whatever they could find to eat. My other advise is to not be afraid to ask any questions of the doctors. Keep an open line between them and you and you will can never ask a stupid question when it concerns your kids.

I am not fan of the adhd meds, so when someone suggested that my son was adhd I looked for other options. I was not very good at doing the food thing so I started him on a vitamins regimine(sp). My oldest son was taking guitar lessons from this guy that also sold Usana on the side. Well he told me about this Dr that did an independant study on combinations of the Usana vitamnins that I could use for my 5 yr old that would calm him down. He said it was all about our kids not getting the vitamins and minerals they need from their diet. Well I bit the bullet and bought the ones they told me to and with a few weeks saw a huge difference in him. I have seen a huge difference in him ever since. He is now 7 and doing really well in school and I now also have my 5 yr old on them as well. The price for these is alot cheaper then if you have to go out and buy the adhd meds without insurance. I have a friend that spends over 400 a month on adhd meds and I spends 70. Just a suggestion...But it might be worth looking into. Let me know if you want more information. I hope you get some resolution in this, I know how hard it can be. Be blessed!

You did not say his age, but I am against medicine for this. All kids have different personalities and learning styles and habits. Why do we take the word of a teacher or doctor that one is ADHD over another, when it is usually just a method of control so the professionals don't have to deal with their active curiosity or being interuptive or wiggling (which is all normal behavior but they act like they don't have time for it -so medicate them so they will be more normal) Excuse me, what is normal??? Be patient, be an advocate for your child and don't forget consequences for bad behavior vs. quiet time at home to help debelop good study habits, etc.
