My son used Adderall and did not work, we switched him to Stratera and it was great. He is now 16 and wanted to stop his meds for a while and he is doing ok.

Actually if your son does not truely have ADHD then those medications will actually make your child more hyper. In essence, these medications are stimulants. For a child who truely has the chemical imbalance that causes ADHD these medications will calm the child and help them concentrate. But for a child who does not, these medications do nothing but make them more hyper. So I would check with your doctor about the actual diagnosis in the first place. Chances are is that your son may not be challanged enough and the reason he's acting out is because he's bored. If your wondering how I know this, it's because 1) my husband was misdiagnosed with ADHD as a teenager (were both 26 now) and I'm also a nurse so it's my job to know this kinda stuff. :) If you need anything, don't hestitate to ask.

hi A., i definitely agree with jaqueline. i am a spec. ed teacher, and i have seen meds cause more harm than good most of the time, though certainly not all the time. i have also seen it be an absolute lifesaver. if you have already tried those 3, and they are no good, i would double check the diagnosis. if you and your docs are absolutely sure he does truly have adhd, and the school program alone isnt enough to help him, then remember that it can take a lot of experimenting to get the right meds and the right dosing. he may have been taking the right meds at the wrong dose. the experimenting can be so tough on everyone. also, have you ever looked into food allergies? i have seen a couple of kids who were like new people once certain foods were eliminated from their diets, such an easy and painless fix. best of luck, D.

hello my name is joann. i have a 11 year old daughter that was diagnosised with ADHD non-hyperactive 3 years ago. she was started on Concerta at first which i wanted to tell you is a form of Ritlan only extended release. im a nurse so of course i had to research this type of medication. It did nothing for her. So they started her on Adderall XR. I am happy to say that this medication has worked for her. I wanted to respond to you because during my research i found that small children that are often diagnosised with ADHD are actually misdiagnosised. The same symptoms are also a form of Bi-Polar. If this is the case the ADHD medication only makes it worse. Also if your child is on any other medication depending what they are can counter act the ADHD medication. I hope some of this information will be of use to you. I hope everything turns out for you and your child.

Okay, this is my first day in this site and my 2nd reply to you.... I think I should get to know you, LOL! Just posted a good diet on the CafeMom site for this very topic. Do what you want with the info!

This worked VERY well with a foster child years ago. I was able to cut out drugs except during school hours within a few months (with Dr's permission). If anyone wants recipes or has questions let me know. She didn't go "off the walls" but was able to express emotions and feelings like every other kid. The drugs stifled her. She blossomed, put some meat on her very bony frame and was more even tempered overall.

Keep in mind that ritalin and puberty don't mix. Raging hormones tend to make ritalin do the exact opposite of what it's supposed to do, leaving them very moody instead.

BEST FOODS:

Eggs and egg yolks, Fish, Chicken, Beef liver, Lamb

Brussels sprouts, Carrots, Beans, legumes, peas, limas, Broccoli
Soybeans and soy products

Mushrooms, Spinach

Blackstrap molasses, Iodized salt

Brown rice, Potatoes

Whole grain breads and cereals: oat, rice, rye

Most nuts (no peanuts), Raisins, Sunflower seeds, Avocado, Bananas

AVOID:

SALICYLATES – naturally occur in almonds, apples, apricots, cherries, currants, all berries, peaches, plums, prunes, tomatoes, cucumbers, oranges

ALSO - Refined sugars, Artificial colors, Artificial flavors, Preservatives, Aspartame (nutra sweet)

LIMITED INTAKE:

Apple cider vinegar, bacon, butter, candy, catsup, chocolate, colored cheeses, chili sauce, corn, ham, hot dogs, luncheon meat, margarine, mustard, pork, salami, salt, soft drinks, soy sauce, sausage, tea, and wheat.

ALSO – antacid tablets, cough drops, perfume, throat lozenges, commercial toothpaste.

***We had found that most of the “limited intake” items were NOT a major concern for our girl. Her definite triggers are all the salicylate items, ESPECIALLY tomatoes! Everyone is different; keep a journal and see what works for you.

MB's FAVORITE FOODS:

Eggs, fish, chicken, steak, pork, shrimp, Chinese food, tuna fish, egg salad, cream of anything soup

Carrots, corn, brussels sprouts (on and off), limas, broccoli, salad w/ranch dressing, fresh veggies, cole slaw
Not crazy about plain potatoes but LOVES scalloped, rice pilaf, spaghetti w/alfredo sauce, lo mein, stuffing, macaroni & cheese, cheese ravioli w/ garlic butter, white pizza w/broccoli & garlic

Oatmeal (throw in raisins & cinnamon), rice krispies, raisin bran, bagels & cream cheese

Grapes, tropical fruit, pineapple, frozen vanilla yogurt, granola bars, oatmeal cookies, bananas w/raisins, all melons

Milk, lemonade, pineapple juice, white grape juice

________________
***Side Note: Things like scalloped potatoes and rice pilaf I make from scratch. I don't buy things that come in boxes or we "just add water". I like to avoid the chemicals as much as possible. Maybe if your little one likes the soups or even the cheese sauce for pasta you can try "hiding" some chopped veggies in there. Keep offering and she may yet develop a liking. Fruit in jell-o or with ice cream?? It can be a real challenge when they can tend to be skinny from meds, too. Keep trying and let me know if I can help. Feel free to post this anywhere if you think others may find it useful.

ADDERALL is horrible! I was on it for 2 years, I have also been on dexedrine which gave me heart problems (borderline murmer).

the one I liked best was stratera ( i think i spelled that correct) that was the only medication that i could still sleep while i was taking.

ALSO depression runs hand in hand with ADHD don't listen if dr's recomend imipramine it made me suicidal (dont worry it stopped once i was taken off of it.) same side affects with welbutran.
the only one that works with depression and ADHD (for me) was celexia so if it comes up keep this in mind.
I hope this helped.

Every child reacts different on ADHD medicine. Have you seen an ADHD medical specialist or did your child's doctor prescribe the medicine? What factors were used to determine your child's condition? How old is your child? Boy or girl? I am a 4th grade elementary teacher, with a degree in special education. I have one son with a sensory dysfunction (this disorder mimics ADHD but without the academic failure). This disorder is often treated as ADHD when the child is in fact NOT therefore medicine does not work, only OT/PT. I would recommend reading "The Out Of Sync Child" by Kranowits. This will help you understand a lot more.

my son has ADHD, for 2 years now, he takes ritilan LA. it works great, but the dr has always told us that u have to teach ur kids how to use the medicine. for example, my son likes to get up during dinner, so we stopped letting him. he has to learn how to control himself while on the medicine. we stay away from candy, soda, etc... good luck
