My 5 yr old had a 2nd set of tubes put in and adenoids removed in May. The adenoids were so enlarged trapping fluid in her ears. We had weeks of one ear infection after another. No problems since. So glad we had it done!
The doctors are recommending my 3 year old have her adenoids removed. Does anyone have any experience with this? Pros and/or Cons?

They took mine out at 4. I can't say that it had a serious effect on me the rest of my life, but I do remember that I've pretty much had light head drainage ever since, sort of a chronic post-nasal drip, and some fairly consistent clearing of throat resulting. Don't know that it had anything at all to do with that, because I've never been clear on what the adenoids do for us.
I haven't had asthma or serious allergies or any other respiratory issues. No earaches, very few sore throats. That's not much info to offer you, sorry. Just a comment.
I'll have to ask my mom why they decided to do that, what was going on with me...I have no memory of that.
Why remove them? I am curious. My 10-week-old has swollen adenoids. He sounds like a train when he breathes, and he's all stuffed up. It's pretty bad, but time and saline are what's supposed to cure him. I never heard of removing them. Sorry I don't really know the pros or cons.
My dd had her adnoids and tonsils removed June of 2008, just three days after she turned 3. She was having it done for the constint sinus infections. The dr came out and told us the sergery went well and he had never seen such huge tonsils in a little kid. She was to spend the night in the hospital because she was so young, they were affraid of her not drinking enough. She pulled her IV out first thing. The nurses forgot to come get us before she woke up and she was very mad. Once home she did great. Not a single sinus infecton.
My son had is tonsils removed last week (tuned 3 in Sept). The dr (not the same as above) did not want him to stay over night. We were out of the hospital by noon (as soon as he urniated). We were admitted to the hospital the next afternoon because he refused to drink anything. We were there for three nights - until he started to at least drink. He hates taking the pain meds, says its yucky. And still strugglint to get him to drink more, but he is eating solid foods in the afternoon. The throat is more soar in mornings because it has dried out.
The say it is very different for everyone. Was certainly worth it for my dd.
My son had ear tubes, Adnoids and Tonsils removed at age 4. He was a mouth breather, always had croup and strep throat. He has done extremely well, when he gets a cold there is no more croupy cough or his ususal stuffiness, he speaks clearer and breathes easier.
At 18 months my daughter had her adenoids removed & tubes put in. Before the surgery, she'd had ear infections every 4-6 weeks; afterwards, not a single one for 4 years.
My daughter had hers taken out when she was Three and everything went fine. She really slept better and has been fine every since. She is 14 1/2 yr old now.
My son had his adenoids removed when he was in third grade. The surgery was really easy. He was only "in surgery" for 15 min. The recovery took about a week and he had a sore neck, some headaches and really bad breath. The doctors told us he probably would only want soft foods or maybe wouldn't want to eat at all but he wanted chicken nuggets for dinner that night. We were glad we did it. He breathes so much better now. He also seems to not get sick as often as well. If I had to do it over again, I definitely would.
My son just had his tonsils and adenoids removed Oct 7th. He's 2 1/2. We went in at 6, surgery was at 7:30 and we were leaving by 11, after he drank a bottle of juice, ate some Jello, and tinkled. Coming out of the ansthesia was AWFUL (he was combative, screaming, crying, etc), and day 1-3 were really good. Day 4 & 4 were OK, a little grumpy, but over all, not too bad at all. The pain med is NASTY and my son couldn't take it because it wired him. The surgery/prescribed pain med also kicked off nightmares and night terrors. Those were horrible, but only lasted a week post op. He now sleeps through the night with no snoring, so it was a great idea.
We had his taken out due to the snoring and occassional sleep apnea. His tonsils were a 3+ w/4 being the biggest, so ours was pretty much a necessity. I'm glad we made the decision to do it.
If you have any other questions, PM me and I'll answer them since I just went through this 2 weeks ago.

We had my youngest son's out it made a WORLD of difference in his breathing.
My son had his removed in May. Dr.Palmer in Ft.Worth did it and he is excellent. All went well, if you have specific questions, let me know. Be prepared for horrible breath for 1-2 weeks out from the surgery...yuck! They said this is totally normal though.
My son had his adenoids removed at 2. The procedure was quick, and he was fine by the end of the day. Sounds a little scary since they have to be put under, but it really wasn't that bad. My son always had a runny nose and snored so so loud. Removing the adenoids has really helped with this. Wish you the best of luck.
I had my tonsils and adenoids removed when I was 6(over 30 years ago) because of recurrent ear infections. I have had 1 earache since.
Both of my older children (now ages 6 and half a girl and 5 and half year old boy) had their tonsils, adnoids, and ear tubes removed two years ago this month. Some think Im crazy and it was punishment for them to both be done on the same day but my kids have felt so much better since having the surgery. We haven't had any more problems or strep throat yeah!
Just make sure you keep plenty of cold drinks and popsicles on hand!
Best of luck!

It was recommended to us when my daughter was almost two. We decided to wait and see if things got better. They did and she will turn three in January; so we are happy we didn't go through with the surgery. Your son is older; so I would assume things would have gotten better by now. At least my ENT said sometimes their adenoids get smaller as they get older. We did the research like you are; our doctor encouraged us to do so. We were trying to weigh the risk verse benefit. I think we would have eventually done it if her ear infections didn't clear up b/c I felt like that would be better than dosing her with medicine so often. Good luck with your decision. I asked the same question when we were considering the surgery. Got some great response from the other mamas!
My son had to have tubes put in his ears twice. The second time he had to have is adnoids removed. It really was not a big deal. I think the surgery took about 45 minutes, which was a little nerve racking considering that the tubes only take about 5-10 minutes. Either way I think it was a good deal, doing the surgery. My son had the surgery over a year ago and hasnt had any issues with his ears since then.
It may depend on the level of chronic issues your 3yo is having. My, now six year old, had a lot of ear infections and got tubes at 2. He did great and we went for follow up at 4 and doc said, great, we'll put in another set of tubes and take his adnoids out. I asked, why? you said his ear canal is developed for proper drainage around 4 and he doesn't snore or have any nasal/respiratory issues.
Only response he had was it is recommended. Needless to say, we did not have the surgery or the second set of tubes placed and my son has done great ever since.
Again, if your child is having a lot of issues as some of the other posts suggest, yes, you should look at it, but if your child is otherwise healthy and not really having issues, really do some research. Ask the doctor why your child is in NEED of the surgery. It may not be needed or as critical as they suggest.:)
It is a simple outpatient procedure. It will probably help with his breathing and future problems.
