Addicted to Lotion?!

Okay, this sounds strange but is a SERIOUS question.

I have a hand lotion problem. Everyone teases me for it and it's true! I do NOT leave the house without a bottle of Curel lotion. Anytime my hands get wet a little or periodically throughout the day I need some to feel "right." I wouldn't say I have dry skin or an actual problem necessitating this much lotion use, but unless I do, my hands just feel terrible to me. I only use lotion on my legs, arms, etc when I actually have dry skin, so this problem is strictly with my hands. I always travel with it and pretty much have to use it every day, I would say 10 times a day (more if I'm cleaning or dishes and have my hands wet.) It's not a habit thing, I don't think, because I physically feel like I have to put it on my hands, even though my hands I don't think are actually dry. And it HAS to be curel - it is the only kind that feels good and I hate all of the scented kinds of lotions.

Today, I got out of the shower and while I always immediately need to put lotion on my hands after toweling off, I realized I left my bottle of lotion in the car. It was unbearable, my hands felt awful I could hardly get dressed to go out and get the bottle.

Has been like this since around high school, I think.

I feel ridiculous even asking this, but does anyone have a similar problem or have heard of this? It would be nice to not be so dependent on it (did I remember to bring it with me to the bedroom tonight? Do I have it packed for travel where I can quickly find it when I arrive?) It's so silly, but any thoughts?

What can I do next?

I don't think it is weird. I am the same way, but not to that extreme. I think of it more like lotion just makes me happy. Like you, I am picky about the smell, but not AS picky. I love to have scented lotions, if I LIKE the scent. And I am the same way about lip stuff too. But I'm pretty picky there too. I like Nivea at the moment. I say don't let it bother you...if you like lotion...use lotion!

Wean yourself, or go cold turkey. Keep a bottle with your shower foam, and use after you shower and that's it. Remember, there will be some "growing pains" associated with this, just like with every other change, but if it is proving to be disruptive, and consuming your thoughts, then maybe you should give it up.

Flip side, you could have worse vices.

Good luck to you and yours.

Well, I'm like you, except with my lips. I HAVE to have lip balm on 24/7. I've been this way for about 25 years now. It started with Carmex, then I realized that Carmex has ingredients in it that actually dry out your lips. So now I use Lansinoh, a super fabulous thick medical-grade lanolin on my lips. I've had my whole family searching for my purple tube of it around the house when I misplace it!

I too have the chapstick thing, but just regular tubes of flavored chapstick, Yes to Carrots minty stuff or Burts Bees. I probalby have 3 in my purse and 6 more strewn aobut the house (on my desk, in my bathroom drawer, on my nightstand, etc...in every coat I own in the pocket).

I do lotion too, just not quite as religiously, but almost. I use Cetaphil.I have pump bottles or the tubs of it in several places in the house, and some in my car and purse. I also can not be without a tissue in my pocket (which means I ALWAYS have pockets as well!).

You are NOT alone! Soft lips, soft hands and a dry nose...thats me!

Hi, I have the exact same problem. The problem is not mental, it is that your skin is used to being moistened by the lotion and the more you put on the less your body produces naturaly. You have to go cold turkey to break the addiction from lotion. It may sound hard when the idea of latering up after a bath but use something like olive oil or coconut oil instead, they are not addicting. There must be something they are putting in lotion to cause this problem. I am currently going cold turkey! It is very tough, but I am sick and tired or woryying about where my lotion bottle is and avoiding tasks that would cause for my hands to get wet. I am breaking this once and for all. Good luck to you!

Oh goodness, I am the exact same way. I would guess I put lotion on my hands 15+ times a day. For sure every time I wash my hands, when I get in my car, before I go to bed, etc. I'm like you, I don't have particularly dry skin, I just "have" to put it on. I guess there are worse things!

Don't let it bother you. It's a mild form of OCD. Indulge yourself. If you were wearing sterile gloves to fend off dirt it'd be a problem.

I wash my hands constantly. Now that it is fashionable to do so no one says anything about it. But, for many years into my late 30's there were people commenting.

I've got stuff about food too. But those I just tease myself over and eat anyway.

Like Lee Lee, I have a chapstick addiction, but the hands after being wet is a VERY close second. With the chapstick, I find that if I realize I don't have it or have access to it, my lips suddenly become chapped...I know it is all mental but in certain situations, I have used hand lotion just to cure the burn of my supposed dry lips... With lotion, I am pretty particular in that I don't need a scented lotion you would get froma speciality lotion store, but a good St. Ives/Curel/ etc. to relieve the dryness. Glad it isn't just me!
