Acne and Hair Falling Out?

I never in my life have had a problem with acne or my hair falling out until after I had my son almost eight months ago. Acne has taken over my face and it is really bad on my scalp (T-Gel shampoo by Neutrogena does not help this). I have also had some issues with my shoulder area and chest area. I have tried everything, Proactive which dried out my face, all sorts of Noxema and Neutrogena products, acne fighting body washes, plain soap. I even started using a mineral makeup line that's somewhat expensive and not helping at all. My doc told me that the birth control I'm on would help but isn't and she did some thyroid test and it was normal. I am desperate at this point, and my insurance is limited in terms of a finding a good dermatologist. I would love to have my face back and to be able to brush my hair without hitting painful bumps and having hair fall out everywhere all the time, I even use a detanging comb but still have hair falling out all over the place! Any advice at all would be wonderful!!! Thanks for listening.

All of your issues also happened to me shortly after the birth of my daughter. It started getting better after I stopped nursing but still I have breakouts and my hair falls out, although not as bad as before. (my daughter is now 22 months.) I haven't found anything that truly helps other than washing my face every night before bed, keeping my hair off my face and constantly changing my pillow case. I think both are just linked to the new change in hormones.

Sorry I don't have a better answer but wanted you to know that you aren't alone and I think it happens to all mommy's :) Oh the joys :)

my daughter was born the day after yours and i am having the exact same problem - it just started this week! acne on top of my head - it's nuts! so if it makes you feel better, you're not alone. i have no idea what brought it about but at the moment, i am blaming those wonderful hormones!!! hope you (we) get some good advice!

A.,

I don't think that is acne. I have the same issues that I have been dealing with since I was about 15. My skin was a mess when I was pregnant and I thought I was going bald too. It is called Darier’s Disease. You can have a biopsy done to confirm it. There are not alot of meds that don't have BAD side effects, especially if you are planning on having more babies. I am 39 now and this is what I am doing now. I gave up on all meds and have gone to vitamins and skin care for sensitive skin through my own business. Send me an email and I can give you all the details. Just to let you know the sun may make it worse. It is game over for me if I get a bad sunburn. It is weeks not days for my skin to recover.
If you don't have a dermatologist I recommed Dr. Steven Brenman###-###-####. He has treated my mom and my sis (it is genetic).

I hope this helps.

Are you overwhelmingly tired as well??? More so than just because you have a baby? When my daughter was about 9 months old I went to the doctor and said I was exhasusted, I had unbelievable acne, and my hair was falling out...he said it was just my hormones getting back to normal and I was so tired because I had a baby. I refused to accept this because I knew something else was going on...I demanded he do blood work. He tested my thyroid and it turned out I had pregnancy induced hyopthyroidism (under active thyroid as a result of the pregnancy). He put me on synthroid and after a few months I was back to normal. I have to have my thyroid checked once a year to make sure my levels are good (to see if my medication needs to be altered). For some women this resolves itself but for others it becomes a life long issue. On the plus side the synthroid is very inexpensive (the genarics anyway)...it would fall under Wal-Mart's $4 plan.

Go to your doctor and demand a thyroid screen. Even if it comes back negative you will have one thing to cross off your list.

Good Luck, God Bless!!!
