Acne After Having Kids

Hey Moms:

Since I have had my kids, I have developed mild to moderate face acne. I never had acne in my teens or early 20's. It's not horrible, but it does bother me a bit. I breastfed both my babies and am in the process of weaning my 13-month-old. Could it also have to do with breastfeeding? I am taking the mini pill (the one that is safe while breastfeeding).

Has anyone else experienced this? If so, what helped?
Thanks!

What can I do next?

I had the same problem after I had my kids. The only thing I have found that worked for me was ProActive.

I have the same exact problem! I never had acne until I had kids! As a teen my face was amazingly smooth and clear. I am now 29 an battling mild acne after my two kids (4 1/2years & 23 months). I quit nursing my youngest about a year ago and still have the acne. I've decided to go under the care of a dermatologist and she has given me antibiotics and a gel. It seems to be working pretty well. I think that the antibhiotics are to just clear me up and the Differin gel is to manage it. You may hace to see a dermatologist. I was on the same birth control and even switched to another one and it didn't work! Good luck on this! Let me know how things turn out.
Now, I wanted to address something in your "A Little About Me" section. You said that you feel lucky to be a stay at home mom, but miss the adult interactions of the working world. Have you ever though about having your own home based business? I do The Pampered Chef and I love it! I get to stay home with my kids during the day and do as little as one show a week outside my house to get my "Tall Talk". Sometimes I do more than one show a week, but it's all up to you and what you want to do. You can work as little or as much as you would like and bring in an extra income for bills, vacations, Christmas or just a little "mommy mad money" to spend on yourself! Have you ever heard of The Pampered Chef? Does any of this sound interesting to you? Please feel free to contact me at ____@____.com if you are interested and we can chat more!

Hi K. -
I am also on the mini-pill and am experiencing the acne. I have found some relief with using Clinique lotion/soap. I have tried everything from Neutrogena to Aveeno Naturals but nothing worked. Clinique seems to be doing the best. i have to use the lotion twice a day, wash my face twice a day and spot treat problems. They might have the right stuff for skin type. Its a little spendy but i honestly haven't found anything else cheaper that would work. I have a 3 year old strong willed boy and a 1 year old daughter as well.

Hope this helps

cleanser..morning and nite..very simple.Plus a day & nite solution..and Yes, theres a little moisturiser age fighting and very lite..Totally worth the money..and time spent.
For the eyes I use Mary Kay Time Wise Age Fighting Eye Cream.. a little dab will do it..if used daily. My Mk consultants num. is 1-###-###-#### 0r 1-877-9334229 her name is Melissa.Good Luck to you..she will be glad to help you..

It could be due to the weaning, and maybe even the pill you are on. After my first I had the worst skin. It turned out to be from my pill, because after I switched my skin got so much better. Also try switching face products. Maybe using something with a bit more kick to it?!

Sometimes after pregnancy women get acne. It's the hormones. Use good cleansing habits, watch the chocolate and oils, and if it doesn't go away after breast feeding stops, talk to your doctor.

Try putting Milk of Magnesia on the acne. I've tried EVERYTHING, and that works awesome and very fast. I put it on with my fingers before I go to bed.

Acne is hormone-related so not uncommon after pregnancy and nursing. You also need to be careful re: what type of products that you are using on your face, skin care as well as foundation. The majority of the products on the market have a mineral oil base that will clog your pores. Arbonne International makes pure, safe and beneficial skin-care products that have no mineral oil. We have an anti-aging line, a self-adjusting skin care line (the Intelligence Line) as well as an acne line (Clear Advantage). For more information you may go to my webpage; www.nursekerry.myarbonne.com. Good luck!

XanGo works very well for acne. It's a juice drink but apply it topically and it works, trust me. I put it on my girlfriends cold sore and it work very well and the cold sore went away. It also works on my 6 year old son's eczema.

Acne or no acne. It's up to you. Check it out below.

Since the acne is due to having kids - then it must be an internal reaction going on with your system. Probiotics work wonders for balancing out the system and since your skin is your biggest organ it will react first before anything else. Probiotics can be found at super supplements and work wonders for the skin. I have even given them to girlfriends who have acne and have never had kids and it still works.

Good Luck!

Hi K.!

Nice name by the way! i too am K.. but anyways! i have had two kids too and both times right aftre delivery i would break out. its caused by hormones. but what i find helps it is OTC stuff at Walgreens for $19.99 called "Klear Action". its the same as proactive (which i have used1) but for way cheaper. its three bottles that you use twice a day. its the cleanser, toner and repairing lotion. if you dont have time for that than pick up a bottle of "bye bye Blemish" also available at walgreens. its $9.99 and you use it as on the spot. it literally clears your blemish overnite!! i love it! i have had acne all my life but i find both these products work WONDERS!! good luck! :)

Our body's chemical makeup changes during and after pregnancy. I found that my hair was just as fine, but that I had way more volume of it and it's very hard to manage... has been that way since my first baby 13 years ago. I would suggest finding a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer that works for sensitive skin. I'm an Avon rep and we have some new products out geared toward acne issues and also a line of products geared toward sensitive skin. If you would like to try either or both, please let me know. I can get you samples or trial sizes.

Hi K.;

Your acne is probably due to low estradiol levels from being on the minipill (it is derived from testosterone an androgen, which can contribute to acne outbreaks). It would be ok to switch to a pill that contains a fair amount of estrogen combined with an anti-androgen progestin such as Yasmin. Nursing moms need to take the minipill only when they 1st start nursing because the estrogen in pills can interfere with establishing a good milk supply, but once the supply is established a pill change that contains estrogen is fine (as long as you're a non-smoker and estrogen isn't contraindicated for other health reasons). Good luck to you.

Hi K.,

I've suffered from acne for years, and the only thing that works for me is avoiding dairy. Don't believe it when people tell you diet has nothing to do with it. Some people just have sensitive skin (and this can change with the hormonal fluctuations of pregnancy) and their skin is easily aggravated. Obviously not everyone has a problem with dairy. Try giving it up for about two weeks and see if your skin clears up. Other foods can trigger it, too, but dairy is one of the most common.

Secondly try using a salycic (sp?) wash, followed by a glycolic acid wash. They not only clear up your skin but will make it very smooth and radiant as well. And they are not harsh or drying.

There are a couple of good books you can read on the subject, one is "The Acne Solution" The triggers are different for everyone so be patient til you figure out what affects you. (Wheat is pretty hard on the skin for many people as well) I wish you well in figuring it out!
