Accupuncture and Fertility?

My boyfriend and I have been trying to conceive for the last 3 months. Someone recently told me to try accupuncture. Has anyone done this and did it work? (Yes, I said "boyfriend". We are not married right now but will be, although not officially engaged. We are both mid 30's and already have a 2 1/2 year old, and not in a hurry to get a piece of paper saying we love eachother.)

What can I do next?

No Ob/Midwife will say that you are having fertility issues unless it's been a year or more of trying to conceive.

That said, I have known people who have had success with this.

I think you are trying to find a solution when you are not yet sure there is a problem. Most fertility experts don't even want to discuss infertility until you've been trying for a year or so. My suggestion is similar to Kristen W's... consider picking up Toni Weschler's "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" and learning about your body.

Also consider your long-term plan for caring for baby and insurance without being married. My now-husband and I had our son before we were married and paid out of pocket for midwives (I was uninsured and could not get on his insurance because we weren't married). I'm not going to give you a long moral argument, because either you two are going to be together or you aren't (plenty of women have married and since divorced after having kids, so I get it) but I will say this: a baby changes everything and can really strain even the best, strongest relationships. Adding the extra costs of pregnancy, birth and raising a child are very real considerations. So, I'm not saying "get married first", but I am suggesting that you get your ducks in a row. FWIW--our son was a blessed surprise: we paid the midwives out of pocket and had a home birth; but note-- I could not get supplemental state aid for the possibility that I might have to be transferred (although lots of people told me *they* thought I could!), I couldn't get insured b/c I was pregnant... all that to say, be sure to have things very planned out in advance. Good luck!

ETA: with a child already, it sounds like you know what you're doing. Have fun!

I've heard good things about it, but it didn't work for my brother and SIL.

They are still doing research to see if it's effective. The fact that they are doing research indicates that it's got the potential to be effective.

That said, if you've only been trying for 3 months, and you're not past 35yo, you probably want to wait at least 3 more months before trying interventions. Become very familiar with your bodily fluids and temperatures. That's likely to be more effective than acupuncture.

If you are under 35 you have NOTHING to worry about after 3 months.
When you say you have been TTC, how are you trying? Are you aware of your fertile days? Charting temp or cervical mucus, are you having enough sex? Or have you simply been of birth control for 3 months and nothing has happened? Maybe you can post a little more information...
For a woman under 35 it is considered within the range or normal to take up to 12 months to get pregant.

I have a friend who did acupuncture in tandem with IVF (not really infertility issues, they wanted a baby after a vasectomy) and she got pregnant on the first cycle...was 38 years old at the time, too.

Good luck.

Yes I did acupuncture for 9 months the first time including herbs and then for 3 months the second time. I also continued to receive acupuncture the entire time I was pregnant for both pregnancies. I highly recommend.
