We are moving to a new house that has carpet just about everywhere. I currently don't have any carpet. We have 2 chihauhau's and I am terrified that they are going to pee and or mark up the whole house. They now sometimes have accidents like if we are gone for a long time from home, and the male dog will get it in his head to sometimes pee on the garbage can Don't know why there. Once he peed on the toilet too. Anyways........ What do you do. Can I prevent it? If not what do you use to clean the carpet for everyday and what kind of vaccum or machine/product should I purchase? I saw a spotbot at the store but not sure what works best. Any insight will help. Thanks in advance.

What can I do next?

I have the SpotBot and think it's great. I think it's worth the money to keep the smell out of your carpets. If you're worried about too many chemicals, you can run it with just hot water. Good luck.

Wow. . that doesn't sound like fun. I wish I had some advice for how to improve the dogs behavior. It seems that would be the easiest way to go. Can you put them in a cage when you are gone?

As for the carpet cleaning, I prefer to use non-toxic cleaners, especially when pets and kids are around.
I use Shaklee's Basic H2 on my carpets. Also, my family used to get out pet stains by putting boiling water on the carpets. As the steam comes out of the carpet, it also pulls out the stain and pet smells. Then you just soak up as much of the boiling water as you can with a towel, and you can even scrub at it a bit if you need.

If you're interested in the Shaklee cleaners, you can find them at www.shaklee.net/rkklemm

Two ideas (from someone who has an old chihuahua and a young standard dachsund). I lock my two up when I'm gone. I've given up on trusting them. They always piddle somewhere. I used to put them in cages, which they didn't mind. But now they have the run of the back entry room. It's tile, and if they pee, then they pee. It happens. My younger dog is also on a drug called Reconcile. It's like a prozac for animals. It keeps him from thinking he has to mark everything -- it makes him calmer. You might want to talk to your vet about it if you start having problems. Chihuahuas have tiny bladders, though, and it seems like they can't go that long without peeing. At least that's what I find with mine.

Hi K.,
I too have a male chihuahua and he needlessly piddles whenever we are in a new place. Woolite makes a great pet stain cleaner that works wonderfully. You can find it a t wal-mart for under 4 dollars. Cut up an old bat h towel to use for just stains. Little dogs really don't pee copius amounts it is just finding where they do pee that is tough.
Good Luck and congrats on the new house.

I would try to find a place that you could confine them when you are gone. We always used resolve on the carpet. I also read a trick somewhere that when you are done using the cleaner on the carpet and it is still wet, put a couple of paper towels on the area and then place something heavy on the paper towels and it will soak up any additional stain.
