Yup, probably some sort of birthmark. Not to worry.
I have noticed for some time now that my 20 month old son has a red spot that covers his knee and part of his thigh when he gets hot, i used to only notice it when he would get out of the bath, then i started noticing it the past few weeks when he is outside playing or after i take him out of the car, the red spot shows up on his leg, i do not notice it any other time, but i have been watching the last day or so to see when it appears. Any thoughts on what this might be?
After doing some research online on and after seeing some of the responses I found that this is actually a type of birthmark called a Port-wine Stain, and it does indicate that it can become darker in color, when a child is crying, has a fever or is overheated, which makes complete since to me because the majority of the time we notice it is when he is sitting in warm water in the bathtub. I want to thank everyone for their response and appreciate your help and putting my mind at ease.

it sounds kind of like a "stork bite" my sons entire forehead is like that.. when he is angry or hot its beat red!
My son has the same thing. Our doc said it's a form of a birth mark. His shows up from sitting in a hot carseat, being bathed, playing outside, basically anything that gets his leg hot. I noticed his when he was probably a little bit younger than your child and he's almost five and his is still as bright as ever!
My oldest son had the same thing on the back of his head and neck. The poor boy was bald till he was three so it was hard to miss. It went away when he was about 4 or 5, at least on his neck. He is now 7 and has a full head of hair so it could still be there a bit, but I don't think so.
