A Little Scared - Rosemount,MN

I am going in for surgery this Friday. My OBGYN found a cyst last year which she thought would go away on it's own. Well, one year later it's almost tripled in size. She had another doctor look at me and they both determined that it's on my urethra. Though I wasn't having any problems as far as urinating, etc., they wanted to make sure so they gave me a catheter ... fun stuff. Anyway, they were right so I am having outpatient surgery and I'll be put out for it. I am a little nervous, ok I'm scared to have surgery. I have never had surgery other than when my daughter was born I had a c-section but I was wake. I'm trying not to show my fear because my husband is afraid too. Last time someone from our family went in for surgery (my husband's father) he passed away on the table. I keep thinking that I have high blood pressure (which I have a prescription for) and my heart will give in. I know I shouldn't feel this way but I do, I'm only human. Does anyone out there have the same fear or maybe has had the same surgery before?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for everyone's thoughts and prayers! Reading everyone's experiences helped a great deal! I let it be known to my nurses and doctor that I was very scared, that helped a lot. They explained everything very well and had already planned giving me an EKG because of my high blood pressure. Surgery went extremely well according to my doctor though my cyst was a little bigger than what they thought. They were going to do further testing on it and I am supposed to call the office in a few days.

I had a cyst removed in 2001. They discovered it during an annual exam, and, since I was doctoring out of town, rushed me through a series of tests (bloodwork, ultrasound, etc.). They were testing to see if it appeared to be cancerous. I had to wait several days for the results of the blood test, but the results were inconclusive. Surgery was scheduled as quickly as possible. I, too, had never had surgery, and in fact, am hardly ever sick, so this was very hard for me. My husband came with me, and tried to calm me down, and even requested the doctor to come and talk to me before the surgery. That was a huge help to me. Going into surgery I knew I could be facing a cystectomy, or a full hysterectomy, but the doctor calmed my fears before sending the anesthesiolgist in.

I can say that my fears of what would happen were way worse than it actually turned out. I did end up with a c-section like surgery in order to remove the cyst, but all turned out fine. I woke up without any issues, which was always a fear of mine as well. Just think positive, have someone with you that you trust to help keep you calm, and just know that it's a very common surgery. I found that explaining my fears to the staff made them go out of their way to calm me, and they explained everything as it was happening so there were no surprises.

It is natural to be a bit nerveous before a operation. Just know that they have made such advances in medicine. Although any surgery has risk, the risk is very minimal. I had the hydrothermal abasion surgery twice and a c-section and a tubal ligation. My oldest who is now 7 also had several surgeries and is alive and well. Everything turned out fine for me. I am sure you will be fine too. Cysts are very common. I have one too!! Talk to your doctor and I am sure they will assure you you will be fine and this is the best way to deal with it.

I know how you feel to be so scared. I never had any surgery til I had my tubes tied and they wanted me awake. I walked in and was in tears the entire way in the room; they reassured me that'd it would be fine and gave me valium to relax. It definitely helped. You just need to let the Doctors and nurses know how scared you are and why and they'll be able to help calm your fears. Hang in there, and I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers!

I haven’t had this surgery but did have my tubes tied and a thermal oblation as an out patient. I too was terrified of being put under…fear of not waking up! I let my fears be known to the staff! When they had me walk into the operating room and lay on the table; I’m not sure if it was a nurse or the anesthesiologist but someone said T. I can see that your scared ( I must have looked like a deer in the headlights) “ your in really good hands and everything is going to be just fine, I’m going to give you some medicine to help relax you. Wow, did I relax! I wish I could tell you what it was that they gave me but I don’t know what it was. My advice is to let your fear be known, tell your doctor, the anesthesiologist, the nurse, tell everyone and they will help you. Don’t feel ashamed of being afraid you’re definitely not alone! Plus they can’t help you if they don’t know.

My thoughts are with you!
T.

I understand your fears. I think we all feel that way. And it does make it worse when we know someone that has passed away or had complications. Sorry to hear about your husbands father. But you are not alone. I have had 3 surgeries in the the past nine months. I had the same fears. What about my kids, my fiancee, what if something goes wrong. The same thaughts as most people i think. It is scary.talk to your doctor about alternative ways for anastesia maybe they wont need to do a general. I believe that everyone has the same fears. It is the unknown and we all think of the worst thing that can happen. I know i did. Wether it is your first or 5th surgery you have the same fears. It is the natural way to think. Especially with the circumstances of knowing someone that has had complications. Be open with your doc about these questions ask as many as you want or need to. Ressearch your surgery online.talk to the anastesilogist to. It is there job to answer any concerns you have. And there are alternatives to being put out. So discuss that as well. I am sure things will go well.

The first thing to do is, stop scaring yourself. Fear is not good going into surgery. You must not fear. I will keep you
in my prayers and pray for you and the doctors and nurses that will be tending to you. I have had surgery a couple of times.
I have had a hysterectomy (not sure of spelling)due to a cyst on each overy. I also had a c-section. I have some understanding of how you are feeling, I will pray that God would give you peace about this. I would like to send you my pray for you, would that be ok? Let me know.

Hi J....I had to have double hernia surgery when I was 21 and then two c-sections following that. I admit I get really scared every time...to the point of bad stomach upset. When I had hernia surgery I was the only female in the pre-op area and the only one bawling my eyes out. It will be OK. There are so many steps that they take if something does start to seem abnormal. Your father-in-law probably was for one, older than you, and for two, having a different sort of operation than you. You'll feel so much better when it's over. Good luck!

I had a breast reduction done about 4 1/2 years ago I too have high blood pressure which I have meds for. They monitor you so closely that I would not worry about it. It will go by so quickly once you are there mine was not an outpatient surgery but I still believe that hospitals are so careful you have nothing to worry about.

I had my left ovary removed about a year and a half ago, and the surgery went fine, I had some pain for about 2 or 3 days, and was fine after that. I have had no complications since, and the surgery went smoothly. I had my ovary removed for the same reason, I had a cyst that was about 4 times the size of my ovary. It's natural to be nervous, because it's surgery, but in my own personal opinion, I think the more positive you can stay about it, the better off you will be in the long run. If it makes you feel the slightest bit better... I meet tomorrow with a neurological surgeon to find out if I am having back surgery. Not fun, but I am staying positive. Good Luck!

No, you are definitely not the only one out there to be afraid of surgery - I've long been afraid of being put under and not waking up myself..but I've been through a surgery and came through it fine..

They will be sure to monitor you closely while you are under.. I'm not sure what else I can say..just that you're not alone in being afraid..:)

Best wishes!

I know how you feel, I have had some procedures done myself and so has my 3 year old daughter. Chances of complications are really low for something like this so I'm sure you'll do just fine. I'll bet your father in law was getting something a little more dangerous done so maybe his chances of complications were greater. I'm sorry that you lost him.
Don't worry, and if you do it's ok and perfectly normal.
Best wishes,
J.
