hi,
my husband and i are moving to amherst in a few days. i'm sad to be leaving my wonderful community in philadelphia, but excited to see what waits ahead for us up north! i have a few questions:

1. are there any mommy and me/playgroups, or stay-at-home mom groups?

2. any recommendations for pediatricians? if possible, we're looking for someone who is on the more progressive end who supports longterm breastfeeding, spreading out/delaying vaccinations, etc.

3. any good music and/or swim classes for 7 month old?

4 any suggestions about midwives in the area? (no not pregnant, just looking for someone to do yearly exam, and perhaps can work with us the next time around:)

THANKS!

What can I do next?

hi!!!! we love our pediatrician - her name is Barbara Stouter and she is through Lifetime Health located on Sweethome Road in Amherst. They have lactation consultants onsite that you can call for support and questions. The number is ###-###-####...you may want to call about your specific questions/concerns. They are very nice about answering questions - ie vaccinations, etc. i orginally received the recommendation from friends (a nurse and a doctor) for dr matthew bartels at that office - we met him at the hospital and he was very nice. we ended up getting an appointment with dr stouter and made all of our apts with her since we liked her so much.
Music by Mar is awesome. We have only gone twice and loved it each time but its the music class that i heard about over and over again. Everyone loves it.
there are lots of playgroups/activities - if you want to email me at ____@____.com i can let you know which ones i am familiar with more specifically.
I have found the Care Connection to be a nice resource. ###-###-#### located on the corner of Main Street and Harlem in Snyder. They have various classes and a store.
i am not really sure about midwives in the area but lynn stroehlein taught the childbirth class that i took. i still have her flyer - it says that she is a nurse, childbirth educator, and doula. she was recommended by my ob-gyn. anyhow, she may be a midwife or know who to recommend - her number is home ###-###-#### and cell ###-###-####. (these are from her flyer so you can call her home) anyhow, i really only know her from the one class but she was great and she came highly recommended.
good luck with your move! i also have a daughter - she is 10 months old now!

I live in North Tonawanda and Amherst is like 5 minutes from me- I belong to a moms group with my church at Kenmore Alliance Church in Kemore- it is Wednesday mornings at 10 and they also have a moms day out on the first monday of every month- let me know if you are interested in joining it!!

In terms of pediatiricians- Tonawanda Pedatrics are awesome- they are actually located in amherst right by ballys on robinson road

I am not sure about the other two requests but I hope this helps

Boy have you come to the right place!!! I grew up and spent most of my life in Amherst and have many of the same views as you, so this is a no-brainer! First, Amherst is a VERY nice place to live. It has consistently been rated one of the top safest cities in the US for over a decade. Where about in Amherst will you be living? We are in Tonawanda now, which is just 1 town over.

1)Yes! There are many playgroups in the area, even a few that have extended nursing Moms who cloth diaper and don't vax! I am in a few of them. I can give you more info when you get here. There is a holistic Mom's group and a natural family group I attend somewhat regularily.

2)Barbara Segal with Tonawanda Pediatrics. Its actually located in Amherst though! She BF her kids until they were 3, co-sleeps and is the only doc in the practice who will treat un vaxed kids. We chose to vax, but one our own schedule and she has been VERY supportive. So much that she went out and bough the book I was reading, read it, and recommended the other docs in the practice read it as well! She's amazing and very loving and affectionate with the babies. I love, love, love her. The others in the practice I'm not sure about, but I schedule all my visits with her. ###-###-####...set up an interview when you get into town!

3)Not sure about swim classes, but the Audobon Library in Amherst has sing a long/story-time for tiny toddlers (ages 1-2) and even though yours is a little under 1, I'm sure you could still come if you wanted to. Miss Lucy does the program and she is great with the kids. There are a few babies who arent quite 1 yet in the class. We still go because Andy hasnt turned 2 yet, but when he does, he graduates to the next class!

4)What kind of a midwife are you looking for? A homebirth or hospital birth? There are a few that come to mind, and lucky for you I am involved with Buffalo Birth which is a national non-profit group that advocates midwife care and options for mothers. I know many of the midwives in the area and could send you to one who suits you best!

Get in touch with me when you get settled in! Maybe we could meet at the library with the babies or you could come to one of the playgroups. Welcome to WNY! ____@____.com

I sent you a personal message but forgot to mention that you can check out Williamsville Community Ed online to see what they offer. I know there is a mommy and me swim class as well as some music classes available.
