I am 36 weeks and 2 days today, I saw my OB this morning and was told I have dilated to 2cm. I am a first time mom, will this 2cm last longer than one week or should I expect to delivery within a few days?

What can I do next?

With my first baby I was 4 centimeters dilated, 75% effaced and 0 station by week 36 but I didn't have my son until 8 days past my due date. My Doctor made the mistake of telling me I would probably have my baby early. By the time I was 41 weeks I was very upset that my hopes had been falsely elevated. Good luck, but don't expect anything.

You just can't tell. I usually went 2-3 more weeks, but that was me. We're all different. Good luck and best wishes.

Some women are at 3 cm for months. You can be dilted for some time. Everyone is different. Good Luck:)

You can still go to term, though your labor will probably be shorter <grin>. I was 3cm 80% at 38 weeks with my first one, and I was still a couple of days late. But my labor was only 6.5 hours!

Each baby is different, and you could go at any time. But being dilated now doesn't mean the birth is any sooner.

Good luck to you!

It depends on the person. I was 2 cm dilated at 35 weeks, and I was still not in labor at due date (lol). My son had to be induced a week later. At 35 weeks, my OB asked me to take it easy so the baby wouldn't come until at least 37 weeks, so I immediately slowed down my pace after 35 weeks. If you want to keep your baby in a little longer, relax now.

It could last forever!!! LOL

Seriously, with all 3 of my pregnancies I was dilated to some point for over a month before labor started. Just relax and wait ( easier said than done.)

You could be dilated for 2 cm for a long time, usually your dilation is not a good indication of predicted the birth (when dilated only at 2cm). Baby will come soon though, no doubt about it!

You probably got all the answers you needed, but my experience has been that 2cm dilated does not mean a baby anytime soon. I was dilated 2cm for almost 4 weeks (from 34-38 weeks) with my 1st, my water broke at 38 wks and I had her by cesarean the next day because I wouldn't dilate further.

With my 2nd I was dilated 2cm for 3 weeks (from 36-39 weeks) and I had a scheduled cesarean anyways.

depends on your body. I was diatated to two and had contractions with my second child for three and a half months. ended up having to be induced.

Not to burst your bubble ;) But I was dilated at 2 for 3 weeks starting at 36 weeks, then 3 cm for 2 more weeks. Yeah do the math on that. :) She was 10 days late. Easy labor though. Don't get too excited. Labor is a process. Every woman is different.

Nope - You could go into labor tomorrow or 6 week from now. I was dilated and effaced 8 weeks before my due date and never went into labor. Even had my membrane stripped and had a gel. But here's to hoping you go before your due date instead of after...The wait can be agonizing : )

I was dilated to 2cm at 37 weeks and stayed there until 2 days before my due date. Remain calm, it may take a while or it can happen tomorrow. No matter what that baby is coming out. Hang in there and enjoy this time before it slips away. Congratulations.

I was dialated 3 cm from 36 to full term. It's more about the effacing than anything. You will do just fine and probably go right up to your due date!
Congrats first time mom!

Sorry to tell you but it really depends on your body. My friend was dialated at 4cm for at least 3 weeks and I was a day late and having contractions that were 3 1/2 minutes apart and was dialated at 2cm. I went from 4 CM to delivered my son in 1 hour 15 minutes! Just be ready, open for whatever, and CONGRATULATIONS!!

Hi.The short answer is that it could mean you will go into labor in the next few days, or not (helpful, I know:). I was 3cm dialated, 80 percent effaced at 36 weeks. Each week the Dr. said he didn't expect me to make it to the next week's appt without going into labor first...the end result? You guessed it..my little girl came 4 days LATE. I think a big thing is how you react to the news. If it causes you to slow down, put your feet up and enjoy the last few weeks or days, you may have a while to go. However, if it causes you to go into new-mommy-to-be overdrive, then you may be in for some fun very soon. Good luck!

I was dialated for 2 cm for a few weeks, but once you start dialating there is a chance of going into labor anytime. My sister only dialates to 2 cm naturally and has to be induced to continue, which they usually wait till almost your due date or a few days after your due date to do this.

I have had 2 all natural births & 2 induced labor births... they both end up basicly the same. I just have an easier time getting to the hospital when induced because I have to get my kids to a safe place before I can go to the hospital & I deliever pretty quickly once my water brakes. So, it's just safer for me to be induced.

Conratz on the little one... it will be here soon - remember to cuddle it as much as you can they grow up so fast!

It's hard to say. I guess you should prepare to deliver soon, but don't be surprised if you are waiting for another week or two. Congratulations!

Not necessarily. My sister was dilated and effaced with contractions (about 10 mins apart) for several weeks before she started having close contractions and actually went into labor. My water broke and I started having contractions without ever dilating or being effaced, and had to be induced to get things going. You just never know. I'm sure you're pretty much ready, but I wouldn't try to rush it yet, 36 weeks is still early. Congrats!

I was dilated at 2cm at 37 weeks. I had to be induced because still at a week past my due date I was still only 2cm. Gave birth to a healthy 9lb8oz boy. Good luck!

I was 3 cm for over 3 weeks and was induced at 4 cm. However, a friend of mine went to the hospital thinking she was in labor, they sent her home telling her she was only 1 cm and she had her daughter the next day. It all depends on your body. I would prepare like you are going to deliver in a few days just so you are ready with no surprises, but it can still be a few weeks.

With my first I was at 3cm at 36 weeks, but delivered at 40 wks, and with my second I was at 4cm at 36 weeks, but delivered at 41wks! I know I'm not the usual, but I would say most likely you can expect to go much closer to your due date. The great thing is, the more you change now, the shorter your active labor is! My first was only 3.5 hours, and my second was 1.5hrs! Good luck!

That is hard to predict. You can go all the way to your due date with 2 cm or go into labor within the next couple of hours. One sure fire thing that things are about to start is when the mucus plug goes. One thing is sure....it has started. Have your bag ready and good luck!!!

It could be tomorrow, or a few days from now. I would rest, try to have someone around that can drive you when needed, and don't go on any long trips.

Congrats and good luck,
