My 9 yr old often, complains of her nipples hutying when she swims . So i thought maybe the chlorine was setting her off. Now even when she showers her nipples turn red and cause her pain. I dont believe this is puperty related but im not sure. I plan to make a dr. Apt. Soon. Thanks

What can I do next?

Can be worse in fair children (doesn't sound promising for breast feeding) I agree with advice below and perhaps the very soft thin pads that you use for leakage while breast feeding might help, they have adhesive strips that might stick to the inside of an undershirt or lined bathing suit top and still be discreet, also the lanolin-based nipple cream.

She is getting her "buds" She may need to put vaseline on her nipples before she puts on her swimsuit. It sounds like they are rubbing on her swimsuit. Or try to find a swimsuit that has a softer interior for the top.

Is she wearing bras or really soft under shirts during the day? This may also be part of the problem, since her nipples are so sensitive, just walking around with fabric rubbing can be harsh.

Sounds like it's puberty related. I remember that feeling when I was in the 5th grade, then i got boobs. Do you eat organic by any chance? Hormones and pesticides are causing our girls to go into premature puberty. Be very mindful of what she eats. I hear switching to a more organic in-take can slow things down.

Its puberty.. I remember mine feeling so raw that I was sure they would bleed.. ugh.. being a girl sucks sometimes. She can use vaseline or the nipple cream that nursing mothers use to help protect them and tell her to not let the shower hit them directly. Good luck.. this is the beginning of a long, sometimes uncomfortable and exciting road.. just keep the lines of communication open with her.. sometimes girls are so embarrassed about the changes thier bodies are going through they try to hide it.. but if you keep talking to her, it will help her realize we all went through it and she is not alone.. =) God Bless!!!

This definately sounds like puberty. However, I would ask the pediatrician if they think it is to early for your daughter. I've just gone through this with my 8 year old, and while some girls develop early, my pedi wanted to be sure, and we did a bone age - revealing significantly advanced bone age. We've now been to a pediatric endicrinologist, and she has been diagnosed with central precocious puberty. the good news is that is can be dealt with, and in a few weeks she starts her treatments to delay puberty - allowing her chronological age to catch up wtih her bone age (and allowing her to continue to grow). Never thought that those breast buds would have been such a worry, but I'm very glad that I talked to the doctor. The tests also revealed an issue with her thyroid that we wouldn't have caught until much later, so it was worth asking the questions. Good luck!

It is probably irritation from the suit and water along with friction - similar to runner's nipple.

Get the chlorine out of the shower water- there are filters you can get to put on the shower.
Make sure there is no soy in her diet- no easy but nesessary for normal puberty.
best, k

100% sounds like she is "developing". call or go in to see the pedi(though that may really embarass her), but i remember some pretty intense breast/nipple pain the summer i began to develop.

It could be she is starting to develop, but check with the doctor anyway.
