Hi Mom's. A girlfriend of mine just called me all worried. She is 9 weeks pregnant and has the flu. She is paranoid she is going to have a miscarriage now. She is also 40, and this is her first, so you can understand her worry a little. I told her no and to just relax because stressing isn't gong to help either. But I wanted to ask you mom's if any one has had the flu while pregnant? Thanks.

What can I do next?

I actually got the H1N1 while I was prego. (16 weeks in) I was terrified of miscarriage. I just got lots (and lots and LOTS) of fluids and rest, plus some pill my doc. prescribed (I couldn't take the 'regular' medication because of the pregnancy). I was completely miserable for about 3 weeks. My DD is now 8 months old, and 100% healthy. :)

holy cow i had the flu while i was pregnant, it was awful. but i was about 11 mos pregnant, i couldnt even get myself up from the bathroom floor... miserable. but, although i felt like there was no way this was gonna be ok, everything was fine. tell her to stay hydrated the best she can.

yes with my first baby I got a horrible flu when I was about 5 months along. I was puking so much and couldn't keep anything down so I called my doctor he said as long as I don't go longer than 24 hours without eating or drinking anything I'll be fine. And right at about 24 hours i was able to keep down water and some soup. That baby is now 4 :) I also got the flu at about 6 weeks pregnant and DID miscarry. But when I went to the doctor he said my miscarriage had nothing to do with the flu....that there was no connection. That early on in a pregnancy the flu wouldn't effect the fetus at all.

Actually - this JUST happened to me. Exact time frame in pregnancy too - weird. I'm not 100% it was the flu - the test hasn't returned... but I felt like I was knocked down and out for 3 days, had a fever (kept it lower than 101 with motrin, horribly stuffed nose, lost my voice and had a very sore throat for about 8 days.

I'm on week 13 now and baby seems fine... really too early to tell, but I'm sure everything will be ok for both her and myself.

I had the flu when I was 3 months prego with my first and I just rested and drank a lot so I wouldn't dehydrate! She should be fine.

She should let her Ob/GYN know and they will point her in the right direction. It can be dangerous to have H1N1 while pregnant for both the mother and baby - she might need to be well hydrated. Calling the doc is the smartest thing to do so that the doctor can keep track of her.

High fevers during the first trimester can cause birth defects. I had the flu at 10 weeks with baby #2 (full-blown influenza -- gotten from my father in law whom we were living with who passed it to my 9 mo old daughter and me at the time- Thanks Grandpa!). Tell her to keep Tylenol in her until the fever is down, around the clock, hydrate OFTEN, sleep as much as possible, use a SinuRinse or netipot if she has congestion, and try to eat even if she doesn't feel like it. My kiddo is perfect! I called my OB and that was the advice...which I followed to a "T".

This can actually be serious. My aunt had flu while pregnant and my cousin was septic at delivery. They brought in a priest for last rites but thankfully she rallied-now she is a M. herself! Your friend should be talking to her Dr. about this and make sure she has a complete recovery.

The risk for pregnant women is to the actual woman, not the baby. She can't the flu shot this early even if she wanted to. She should just rest and take care of herself.

YES... That is when I found out I was pregnant. I am a heavy person so my periods were not always on point. I had the FLU when I was about 9 weeks along. I went to the doctor to get medicine, I went home pregnant. LOL :) :) I took all kinds of over the counter medicine because I did not know I was pregnant. Well let us just say I have a beautiful 8 yr old now. She is fine. The best thing is to relax and drink a lot of fluids. She needs to take care of herself. Get lots of rest when she can. Good Luck! :)

The risk of the flu while pregnant is to the mother, not to the baby flu is also much more dangerous to the mother toward the end of pregnancy -- when the lungs can't expand as fully due to the large uterus -- than early on). It is truly miserable, but the baby should be fine. Just tell her to be extra sure to keep hydrated.

I was 8 months pregnant with the flu. My doctor was concerned about hydration. I was not able to keep any water or food down, I was vomiting, high fever etc. so he said I had to go to the hospital for a water IV, . I just got a bag of fluid or 2 in the emergency room. That was it, all was fine. If she does go to ER make sure she tells them she is pregnant, they will see her right away. I was 39.
