I'm 9 weeks pregnant and I had an episode yesterday were my vision went blurry, I lied down and put my feet up. I took a short nap and when I woke up my vision was better but I had a small head ache and chills that later went away. I called the OB nurse and she said it was fine. Is this normal??

What can I do next?

You may want to get a glucose test early. There is a such thing as pregnancy induced diabetes that can affect vision. Just an idea.

I had spells like these about weekly during the first part of my pregnancy. Always when I was tired and usually when it had been a while since I had eaten. My OB felt that it was probably a sugar low due to my hormones. I found that it was best to always have a soda or juice in my purse as well as a sugary snack. I would eat these as soon as I began to feel ill. Wait a little while (usually about 15 minutes) until I felt better before moving around or driving. Then I would eat something with protein and fiber for some longer lasting nutrition since I had just had a sugar jolt.

blurred vision is a symptom that can occur because of many pregnancy related problems including toxemia, dehydration, gestational diabetes, and well probably everything else the other mom's listed. by itself it doesn't point specifically to one problem. my friend and i had the same problems on and off during our pregnancies, in mine later and her's earlier. we both just told our doctors when it happened and it turned out, for us, to be nothing big. but whenever you are concerned you should talk to your doctor.

similar thing happened to me but I was further along in my pregnancy- lost about 90% of my vision temporarily while I was driving ot work- thatnk goodness i was in traffic and barely moving. I worked at a hospital and only found that my BP was low- no other issues. and it all resolved quickly. Very very dizzy however for a while after- but rest improved that.
Good luck!

You can definitely have this ealry in the pregnancy! Were you dizzy? I went to the ER very early in my second pregnancy because I was so dizzy and couldn't see or walk straight - turns out it was just early pregnancy symptoms. You are probably fine, but have your doctor check more if you are concerned.

Well I'm pregnant too and I've occasionally had blurred vision myself. I've read books and heard stories that its completely normal. If you wear contacts or glasses you may want to have your prescription changed for the remainder of your pregnancy then switch back to your old prescription afterwards.

Hi A.,
It sounds like a visual migraine to me. Did all of your field of vision go blurry (less likely to be visual migraine), or just one area- area size and shape may change, but its not usually the whole field of vision (more like a visual migraine)? And did it stay blurry even if you closed one eye? Visual migraines can vary greatly, and mine are followed by a regular migraine headache. If I can take some Tylenol right away, I can usually stave off the headache part, not the vision problem. The dark quiet room suggestion is best. I don't think they are any more serious than a normal migraine, but it can be scary the first few times it happens if you don't know what it is. And yes, vision changes during pregnancy are common (and even while breastfeeding its possible). Congratulations on your pregnancy - I hope this particular symptom doesnt show up too often for you.

Blurred vision is NEVER normal. You may have an ear infection - I had one the first time I was pregnant and couldn't even stand up straight, let alone see clearly.

It could be that you are getting the flu as well. DO NOT PANIC. If you have a fever, call your OB. If you have blurred vision again, call your OB and don't let the nurse tell you - it's fine - because it might not be.

Take care!

I think it's pretty normal. Pregnancy can be tough sometimes. It could be the pregnancy or you may have caught a little bug. I think 9 weeks would be too early to have pregnancy induced hypertension, but being someone who had preeclampsia with both of my pregnancies I might want a to check bloodpressure. You can you to Giant or CVS and check it there if you don't have a monitor at home. Hope this helps:0)

I had that happen to me with my second child. It's your blood pressure. Make sure you eat when you're hungry even if it's a snack and drink lots of water. Hope you feel better =)

Hi, A. - I have heard of women having vision problems during pregnancy. If the OB nurse said not to worry, I'm sure all is well. Good luck. N.

It sounds like you had a migraine...which is common during your first trimester. I am pregnant with my 3rd child and each pregnancy had about 3 migraines during the first trimesters. The best thing for you to do is to lay down, turn off the lights and even put something over your eyes so it is completely dark and take some tylenol. If you do that right away, the migraine does not seem to go into a full blown on one. Also, it helped me to be aware of what triggers them. For example, I was very cautious to eat sweets or cheese on an empty stomach. Hope this helps and just remember, once you hit 13 weeks, the migraines should not reoccur.

I know that's got to be scary, but remember - one of the first symptoms women used to have to go by was fainting (back before the handy dandy pee-on-a-stick). So I'd guess it's a pretty normal issue. I think it has to do with re-routing blood supply and your blood sugar being a little wonky.

Hello, I am an optometrist in Norfolk. It is normal for a woman's vision to sometimes change when she is pregnant; sometimes they are lasting prescription changes, and other times just a transient mild fuzziness. You could have been dehydrated, especially since you had the subsequent headache and chills. Also, I would ask about gestational diabetes, especially if this or any doubling of your vision occurs - spikes in blood sugar can cause blurriness. The last option would be hypotension, a lowering of your blood pressure since you are sharing your circulation with the baby now too. Please feel free to call with any further questions 627-EYES. Good luck.

This was completely normal for me. I had my prescription change during my first pregnancy. I would get blurred vision, headaches, dizziness, and lots of vertigo all of which made me very nauseous. I actually fell walking down the sidewalk and ended up in the hospital with a concussion. My doctor said that each symptom was my bodies way of trying to communicate with me. I was not getting enough water in my system and trying to do too much. I started drinking more water and tried resting more and this really helped. When I was in the hospital they also discovered my potassium level was dangerously low. I would talk to your doctor about your daily routine and make sure your in take is enough for your lifestyle. Communication is key, with your doctor and your body. Good luck and God bless.

I am pretty sure it is common for people's vision to change during pregnancy. Off and on, my vision was affected (blurry at different points in the day) during my pregnancy. I remember talking with friends and they said eye doctors don't recommend getting any new prescriptions because your vision is being affected by your pregnancy (just as your teeth/gums become more sensitive). I don't know if it's related, but ever since I've given birth, my vision has not been blurry; however, I am having a difficult time wearing my contacts again (dry, itchy, etc.). I have heard of this happening to some people...

Best wishes on your pregnancy!

I had similar problems in the beginning to. I got dizzy when I stood up for even short periods of time. My doctor also said similar issues are normal. I'm 28 wks now. You'll be fine, but call the doc whenever you feel something may be wrong. Better safe than sorry...

That happened to me and I discovered it was a migraine - my head didn't hurt, but I could barely see....so I laid down and a bit later it went away. I usually suffer from 'normal' migraines, but that time my eyes were affected. Could be a normal symptom for you as well.
