It is left over from his umbilical cord. My little guy still has it and he is 13 months. It will eventually go away. We have asked the ped mulitiple times and he says just keep it clean and let it air out!
Ok, this is weird. I was changing my nine mth old and noticed what I though was dirt in his belly button. I tried to clean it out with a qtip, when I noticed another piece a little further down. I kep trying to get it out and it looks like it is attached to his belly button. What on earth is this?? I have never noticed it before. It seems to be further down, not right on top. I thought it was dirt, or maybe stool (he had a huge BM earilier and I thought maybe I had misssed some) Has anyone ever heard of this??

It may be dried blood. Are there any odors or any discharge? If not, You can try hydrogen Peroxide. Try not to dig around in there.
It is not an emergency, but mention to the Doc at the next appointment to make sure it has all healed up.
If there is a discharge, you may want to call in and speak with the nurse to let them know about it.
Dont mess with it. Show it to the doctor. It might be some of the cord that worked its way up out of the skin and if you pick at it it might get infected.
My son had that for a whole year. I kept forgetting to ask the doctor about it but since he'd had several check ups, I just ignored it. It was from the umbilical cord. He's 19 months old now and it's gone.
Just a guess but it could be where the cord feel off after birth. One of my kids had it stay on longer than some of the others and it left a black area in the naval like you describe. Maybe not but that's what it sounds like to me.
