9 Month Old Vomiting Breastmilk

I am seeking help as to why my 9 month old continually vomits breastmilk? This has been going on for about a month now. It's not projectile, but it's much bigger than just a spit up. He has cow's milk protein intolerance, so I cut dairy out of my diet as well, and for awhile it stopped, but it's back again. I make my own baby food, obviously dairy free, and we are going very slow (one food at a time). I don't know what else it could be?

I would take a look at my diet and think about removing other common food allergans. Because vaccines can trigger so many food allergies some of things to consider that are ingredients in the shots are: eggs, yeast, soy, sulfa, dairy and another one that is tough is gluten (all wheat, barley, rye, and usually oat). So be vigilant about the dairy/casein, remove all soy as it is just as offending, for a couple of weeks. If it continues remove eggs, and so on.

As someone else said as to how much vomit there is another thing to add in is medication for your baby. The problem I have with medication is that doctors prescribe it without finding out the 'why' and they just want to fix it. Don't wait 10 years like we did to find the why it was happening.

Also, do some more research on vaccines as to which ones your baby really needs and really think about NOT doing ANY of the flu vaccines. Please. For the current flu informtion on what you aren't hearing in the media go to www.mercola.com

The AAP recommended schedule of shots for children is too many, too soon. Here are sites and books that I always recommend for people to start their research:

Maybe he has acid reflux, my son did and would throw up often after s feeding and sometimes an hour or two after. He started taking medicine which helped a lot, grew out of it by 6 months though. Just a thought...

Do you burp your baby? My guess is that it is probably gas. Try giving your baby Mylicon drops and see if it helps. Also burp your baby longer (pat him gently* while holding him over your shoulder ). Sometimes it takes a long time for the gas to bubble up. Also, don't let him/her jump around too much after feeding. Mine vomited after I bounced him up and down a little too much.
If you sometimes use a bottle, try a different brand that has a membrane to cut down on the gas.

A.,

Have you added anything to your diet or his? My youngest is intollerant to dairy proteins and allergic to soy proteins. Dairy and soy are hidden is SO many foods. Are you sure you aren't ingesting some somewhere? It is even hidden in things like vitamins.

My LO also did this. He hadn't spit up for a long time then he started again around 7/8 months, We figured out he was teething. Stopped after a few weeks. I would ask the doctor to check his weight just to make sure he is gaining and not spitting up too much. Also, try switching the food. Is he spitting up mainly in the morning, afternoon, etc? Then switch the food prior to the spit up.

Continually is an interesting word... it means different things in different contexts...

Continually in my head is close to 'breathe in, vomit, breathe in, vomit, continue for duration of the day.' Obviously, that's not what you're suggesting, of your baby wouldn't have made it to 9mo.

Have you cleared all the casein out of your diet? It's very difficult to do if you eat packaged or prepared foods (even prechopped veggies may have it, almost all margarine does, so does soy 'cheese') or ever dine out... anything less and he is still getting cow's milk protein, and will have every reason to respond to it.

'Bigger than spitup' is another weird one. I've known healthy and happy babies who spit up probably a cup every hour... big blobs at a time, sometimes as much as 1/3 of a cup at a time. Still, it was clearly spitup and not vomit, as it lacked the retching aspect of real vomiting. Things just 'came out' with little fuss --many times an hour. Lots and lots...

If he's not distressed, and is growing normally (for breastfed babies that means gaining a little, staying the same weight while getting taller, staying the same height while gaining a little, in cycles), it's probably not worth dealing with vigorously, unless everything in your house is carpeted or upholstered and the cleaning time is getting insane...

My daughter did that. Other than staining and ruining every good outfit I owned, I don't think it did any real harm. I tried everything. Good luck.

Hi A.,
It could be that he is swallowing air? is the milk coming fast? It could also be that he is 'reading tension' from
your concerns about allergies especially if he is a sensitive
child. if none of the above applies, I would mention it to the doctor. Of course the first thing is going to be is he gaining? growing? wetting diapers? Then its probably some weird phase...

Dear A.,
I am sure you are very worried about your 9 month old baby vomiting after feeding. In order to assess the situation I would need more information about you and your baby. How is your baby's weight gain? How did you determine your baby has a cow's milk protein intolerance? Does he have an intolerance to others foods? (This is common for babies with milk protein intolerance.) How often does your baby stool? What is the color and texture? How much and what type of solid foods does your son eat? When does he eat solids compared to breastfeeding?

I know I can help you with this difficult situation if I have more information. You sound like a very concerned mommy, A..

I am both a registered dietitian and a lactation consultant. I would love to "meet" with you via SKYPE for a consultation. Please visit:
