Hi mamas!

My 8 month old son will not eat baby food. He drinks his bottles just fine. However, I did try solids at 4 months old just like I did with my first son. Well, he wasn't really into it. I didn't pressure him to eat them. I would occasionally offer them to him a couple of times a week to see if he was ready. I did this until he was 6 months. At 6 months I offered them daily. If he opened his mouth for them GREAT! If not, well he just drank his bottle and that was fine. It was probably only about 1/3 of the time that he actually ate them. Well, a few weeks ago, he just stopped opening his mouth period. He would turn his head and not want anything to do with baby food. He does have 2 bottom teeth and I have a co-worker whose baby is a week older than mine and her baby only eats finger food. SO, I began offering him puffs. He will put those in his mouth like crazy. He loves them! But he won't swallow them. He will chew on them and gum them and then spit them out. Tried giving him soft-cooked carrots and peas and he did the same thing! He continually picks them up and puts them in his mouth and spits them out! My husband offered him applesauce this morning--not baby food kind, but regular kind--to see if he would like it better than the other kind. Well he repeated opened his mouth wide for it like he thought it was yummy, but he did the same thing! Just squished it right back out! Has anyone else experienced this? Could there be something wrong? Oh and yesterday he swallowed a puff 2 different times and puked both times after swallowing them. He seems to have an issue with anything other than liquid going in his throat. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks mamas!

Really babies can do nothing except formula for the first year. It is complete nutrition. I know we all start them on solids before that though. They would be totally shocked when the formula is gone and they suddenly have to start chewing and swallowing.

I think he is just not ready to eat solids. He is perfectly normal. Just keep trying occasionally and let him tell you when he's ready. I would think about 10 months he'd be ready to eat baby food 2-3 times per day.

You could check with your doctor. My daughter didn't eat solids until amost 9 mos. Was perfectly happy with me or her bottle. I think he's probably just fine.

He's not ready yet. Don't get hung up on how other folks will say "my baby's eating solids at seven months!" or whatever. Each child is very different. Some parents, tired of doing bottles, also seem to push solids too soon these days, I believe. He is still slightly young to be ready for the many textures that solids involve, so let him drink a bit longer and try the foods again later. The fact that he vomited after swallowing a solid really is your cue that it's time to back off for a while. If he is gaining weight at the right pace and is healthy, don't worry about getting him onto finger foods and solids so quickly. He could likely choke if he keeps stuffing his mouth with puffs anyway.

I suggest that his ability to swallow solids is still immature. It's not important that he eat solids at this point. Wait a month and try again. Formula/breast milk is his main source of nourishment until he's a year or so old.

If your son doesn't open his mouth at all, it could be he is not hungry. Is he filling up on too much milk? At that age they don't eat lot of solid food, so if he is drinking lot of milk all day then obviously he won't be interested in eating anything.

My son was on baby food until a year old! I used to worry a lot because almost everyone has their baby stop eating baby food by 9 months or so. My son would eat stage 3 baby food after 9 months , but if I gave him finger food, rice etc he would gag and puke everything. I read some babies have a strong gag reflux. I used to try very hard to get him to eat regular food, he wouldn't open his mouth. He was just happy with pureed food. At around 13 months he started showing interest in eating other foods, and by 14 months he would eat very well and didn't want pureed food anymore. So your son will get there too.

Another thing, does your son have a cold or something?Maybe this throat hurts?

I agree with everyone else that he just may not be ready or that he could be full from his bottle if u are giving his bottle first. My son is almost 11 months old and doesn't always want to eat baby food, I think part of the reason is because he is teething. My second child was still on baby food after he was a year old because he gagged on everything even stage 3 baby food. I think he was about 14 months old or so until he started eating regular food. Every child is different. Oh the other thing I was going to say was maybe he is sick and his throat hurts? Take care and God Bless you and your family!
