My 8 month old son barely fits in his infant car seat anymore he is very long. Measured 22 inches when he was born. He needs a new car seat but, I think he still needs to face the rear of the car right? I think they need to be 12 months old before they can face forward. Am I right on this? Also, we are extremly broke my friend was kind enought to lend me her infant car seat but now we need a new one. She is still using her bigger one for her 1 1/2 year old. Any ideas where I can get one new or used cheap?

What can I do next?

check out www.freecycle.org and find your local area, they offer things still good that people are done with. I run a local chapter, and we see car seats on there a lot. Make sure it is new than 8 years, and has never been in an accident. I think size and neck stability is the issue with front to rear, how strong is your baby's neck? My sons are tall. Winter clothes made the seat too small until the warm weather came for both of ours. Good luck.

The rule for forward facing is 20lbs.is what I was told by my doctor or 1 year old if they do not have good head control. Your doctor should be able to make a recommendation but I would venture to say that 8 months is too early.
You can get an infant to toddler seat which can face forward or backwards and will last until he can go in a booster seat. My guess is you could try Craig's list or go to a thrift store or something to get one on the cheaper side. Just make sure it is an infant to toddler one so it can face backwards for your little one.

My 15 month old went into a convertible car seat facing backwards at 8 months and at 10 months our doctor had us turn him around to face forwards. She said that with his height he was pushing on the seat and in a car accident his legs would be crushed. We did buy a relatively expensive car seat but my mother bought one at Walmart for her car that was convertible for less than $40 and it works as well as my expensive one.

Sounds like you are definitely in need of a convertible car seat, the kind that can be used both rear- and forward-facing. If you're in the Nashua area, both Mother & Child and Children's Orchard sometimes carry car seats. I've also seen car seats listed periodically on the Nashua Area Freecycle group. There are Freecycle groups for most cities, and you can find your closest one at http://www.freecycle.org/

Good luck!

We used the bigger car seat facing backwards for the first year of my daughter's life. We bought a Cosco car seat(cheap one) and actually had one car accident, full impact on her side and she was fine, no bumps even. The child has to be 1 year and 20 lbs. My daughter never reached 20 lbs until 17 months, so we were backwards for awhile.

Hi,

The best persom to ask is your sons doctors. Our doctor told us our now 13 almost 14 month old could start facing forward at 9 months old due to her height and weight and she held her head up on her own very well. It is more dangerous for him to be in a seat that doesn't fit him properly then putting him in a bigger seat...most bigger seats are rear/forward facing so even if it were a bigger one you could still have the option of rear facing. As far as where to go, you could try consignment shops in your area. I do not suggest yard sales as you never know if the seat has been in an accident nor do you REALLY know the background of the seat, I assume most consignment shops would know more info. about a seat. Good Luck. Also try Craigslist ( www.cragslist.org )
