7 Month Old Has Odd Napping Schedule

Ok since my son was 3 months old he has been napping every two hours for 20-30 minutes. During his really bad teething time it was whenever and still only a half an hour. Now it's back to every two hours at 1/2 hour. Is this normal? He sleeps 10-11 hours a night so I know he is getting plenty them, but a half and hour seems so little to me and not normal. I know every baby is different, but this is odd. All my nieces and nephews that I practically raised all slept for 1-2 hours each nap and had 2 or three by they were 7 months. He has 4-5 depending on when he gets up and finally decides to sleep. So I'm just wondering if anyone else has a baby that does this. I forgot to ask my ped when we were in a week ago, and we'll be seeing him again in 3 weeks to get more shots (we are on an alternative schedule) So will ask him then, just want you all's opinion.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks guys! Glad I'm not the only one out there with a cat napper. And yes I am very glad that he sleeps well at night (for the most part)!

My son also only slept in short spurts at first -- 30-40 mins until almost 10-12 months if I recall. (He is now 18 months). There are different opinions about this....from Elizabeth Pantley to Penelope Leach. Some think they should try to sleep a bit longer and some thing that more 'wake' babies, well that is just their temperament for now. Check out Pantley's "No Cry Sleep or Nap Solution" for more information and/or ideas.

Hi. My nearly 6 month old does the same thing. He basically is awake for an hour and a half then sleeps 20 to 30 mins. Occasionally he surprises me and sleeps for a couple of hours at lunch time but generally it's the short power naps. I read in the book Baby Love that some babies do this and that they generally do grow out of it progressing to longer naps. I feel that he gets enough sleep (he generally has about 5 naps during the day) but it's just more challenging for me to work our day around them. So i feel for you and can tell you that it is not just your son but I don't have any solutions..I have tried leaving him in his crib when he wakes to see if he goes back to sleep and he will just hang out there for a while but be awake which kind of defeats the purpose as he will still be tired after another hour and a half. I think I have resigned myself to the fact that we get a good nights sleep from him (7pm to 6am) and I would rather have that if I had to choose between the two!

While I wouldn't say normal, I wouldn't say abnormal. One of my grandsons does that. He's 10 months old now. He's fine and healthy. It's a tad inconvenient at times, but other than that no problem.

My 2 1/2 year old cat napped for a looooong time. Probably til a year when he started taking two naps a day. I would say it's normal.

Are you nursing on demand? I did and that would knock him out every time. He didn't sleep well at night either, only in 2 hour blocks. Now he is a good sleeper and takes 1 nap a day.

I think it's normal....I wouldn't worry about it at age 7 months. If he's healthy and happy, I think its nice that he/you are in a position to let him tell you what his body needs.

After he wakes , feed him, diaper him, and he should only be up maybe a small bit after that. The minute he starts to show ANY fussing, he is ready for the next nap. put him down. He may just be getting overly tired- and then it is hard to sleep in that situation.
