7 Month Old Coughing Then Vomits

A few days ago my daughter was playing on the floor and started coughing I thought she was choking on something and picked her up and she vomited everywhere. Yesterday she was fine but again today she coughed a little then puked all over my husband. I don't know if it is excess saliva from teething or what. She still doesn't have any teeth but is definitely chewing on everything. She seems to be eating normally until today when she refused her bottle. Does anyone have any similar experiences with this?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for the responses. This has been a wonderful resource. Come to find out she picked up rotavirus from the gym daycare. After she puked everything possible in her little body yesterday we headed to the doctor. She is now keeping down fluids and rehydrated. Thanks again!

Usually teething babies will refuse their bottle and throw up some due to excess saliva and acid. Unless she is running a high fever or really acting lethargic, she is probably teething. You can give her teething tablets and tylenol if she in pain. Good luck! (I have 4 children)

Hi there! I do home daycare and one of the little girls I watch is almost a year old and she used to do that all the time. Her mom took her to the doctor and at first they just kept saying it was allergies. Her mom kept pressing the doctor, so she finally was seen at Phoenix Children's Hospital by a specialist and they found out she had asthma. They have her on an inhaler twice a day and now she is fine. This may not be what is wrong with your child, but if it continues, I would have her checked out just to make sure it's not.

This happened with my sister who has 7 children. Her youngest was doing the same thing you described during church one day...after coughing, gaging and refusing to nurse, he threw up and my sister found a little piece of plastic on his messy shirt. It was the little plastic sticker on a travel tissue package he was chewing on during church. I have 4 children and none of mine were bothered by excessive saliva during teething. It might be a flu. Hope everything is going better.

This often happens to babies when they have excess mucus draining down the back of their throat. Allergies, teething, a cold, ear infection, many things could be causing the drainage. If her nose is runny or stuffy, that could be what it is. They literally just gag on the mucus. Hope that helps.

Hi K. F,
This is J. M, I had two boys that did this as well and they were both on formula. Come to find out both of my boys were allergic to the formula, and after brining them to the doctors also found out they were lactose intolerant. Since formula has primarily dry milk ingredients in them, and some testing out if this was the factor that was indeed the case. They were just like that coughing and then vomiting all over, and then not wanting to eat. I would see what your pediatrician says.
I just know that was the case with my two boys. I hope all goes well and the pediatrician can find out something soon.
A caring friend,
J.

That would happen to my daughter when she was getting a bug. Sometimes they do have so much saliva, and cough so hard it makes them gag, but the cause could definitely be a virus. Give extra loving, extra liquids, and watch for a fever, too. It could be teething, and you can tell if you feel her gums for swelling. I used to give Ibuprofen for bad teething days and nights.

Good luck...either way, baby doesn't feel like she is feeling so well.

Does kind of sound like she may have something stuck in her throat. Better get her in to your pediatrician. Keep a close eye on her, if something is stuck and it moves, could be bad.

I had same problem with my four monthn old son he started throwing up and had the runs. I took him to the pedetrician and wasit was normal due to teething and was told to give 2 oz, of milk every two hours and water in between. It took about a week and had a bad case of diaper rash. Due to some acid and germs babies body has to go through it was tough and a long week. your baby will be okay.

Kacy, it could be drainage (mucus) it is allergy season she tries to cough it up but then it causes her to gag which then vomits. you should take her to the dr. maybe it could be as simple as getting a humidifier, especially if it mainly in the morning, after draining all night.

My doctor said that if it is a barking cough then it is probably headed into the croup stage so I would take her in so it can be caught early!

K.,
I don't know if the coughing has anything to do with your daughter's vomiting, but since she's done this twice and is refusing her bottle, I think it's time you took her to your pediatrician. It may be just a "stomach bug", but you'll feel better if you check it out.

Hi K., it sounds to me like she may have an allergic reaction to whatever you clean the floor with. My son when he was like 7 months i had put him on the living room floor and he played thier fine when i noticed he had welches all over his body, it looked like i had beat him with a belt or something, I took him into the doctors office and he had a very bad allergic reation to the materia of the rug. Take her to the doctor and have her checked for allergies. Just to be on the safe side. If you put her on the floor make sure you put something on it or wash it with water just clear water.
