My 7 mo old has been eating solids for a little over a month now, and in the last couple of weeks he's been having bowel movements 2-3 times a day. They are mostly soft solids and sometimes just a small round ball. Is this normal?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the comments and advice. We've all adjusted. He's slowed down a little bit but still stays around 2-3 a day. It was so good to read about everyone else's experiences. We started giving him some water and now he'll sometimes have water with some apple juice and that seems to help.

I agree with a lot of what the others have written, but wanted to add that if you have not introduced water, you may want to, not only to keep him from getting constipated, but also to get used to the taste and make him a life long water drinker. My son, who is almost 3, will most ofetn ask for water when he's thirsty vs. other options.

This sounds about normal, although if they are hard at all, he may need more fluids. Mostly they should be soft and squishy, so if they are taking the shape of a ball they are probably a little tough. Does he seem to strain when it passes? Then, he may need more things that aren't constipating, so limit bananas, rice and applesauce. Instead give more things like pears and prunes and oatmeal.

Very normal! My little boy when he was that age did about 5 bm a day. His doc was so impressed! Now he's 17 mos and has 3 bm a day. He has a great digestive system.

Mine loved fruits and veggies and could have up to 4 a day, and up to quite an advanced age. I thought it best to potty train him at age 3½ due to this! That was OK, as age that age it was like clockwork. Your baby has a really healthy digestive track -- and thank goodness for that.

Hi T.,

I don't know what is "normal" but I remember when my boy/girl twins were that age. The boy had a poop in his diaper at nearly every change, while the girl didn't. He was a real poop machine! I don't know why but they both were very healthy, just so different!

Thats exactly what you want. Solid but not hard. My, now 12 month old, was/is the same. 2-3 a day is good.

If your child is eating 2-3 times a day and the movments are somewhat sold this is not only normal but very healthy. I wish my body was that responsive. What ha healthy little man.

Yes, that is great, and that is what you want. We should all be so lucky! Our system is designed to have movements each time about a half hour after we eat. So, congratulations and keep up the good work!

That's been the same exact thing with my 7 month old. I would say from my experience and from what my mom friends that it is normal.

Ha Ha! I have to laugh at this because I went through the same thing with my two little ones. My daughter was having 5 poops a day! She is 3 now and it finally slowed down around 2 or so but she still has 2 every day. My little guy who is one still has 4-5 poops a day. My doctor said that some kids just poop more than others! As long as long as they are solid and soft they should be fine. Just a healthy baby you have!
