6Wks Preg with Cold

I am 6 weeks pregnant and just came down with a cold. It's making me anxious as my previous pregnancy ended in a miscarriage and I was sick with colds the entire time I was pregnant. My doc told me there was no connection, but I still can't help but be nervous about it. These first few weeks are so critical to the baby's development. I know the common cold isn't supposed to be dangerous to a pregnancy, but looking for other moms out there to share their experiences. How did you get relief without meds, what did your doc say, etc.? Thanks for your support.

What can I do next?

Try not to get too stressed about your cold, stress will break down your immune system making it harder to get rid of the cold. I swear by home made chicken soup, with every kind of vegetable in it that you can think of, butternut squash, parsnip, carrots, brocoli, green beans, peas, onion, celery, spinach and anything else you can think of. Really, all those vitamins and the warm soup helps a cold. There was some research about fresh chicken broth having healing effects on the common cold and flu. I hope you are feeling better soon. Congratulations on your pregnancy.

Homeopathy is safe during pregnancy! Try Boiron Cold Calm - available at Whole Foods, Vitamin Shoppe, and now also at Rite Aid, CVS, Walgreens, etc.

I had the flu early in my second pregnancy. It was rough. I took Tylenol (I had a temperature of 102.9), but tried to avoid taking anything else. I ended up with bronchitis and was sick for weeks with a horrible cough when I finally complained to my OB. He gave me prescription medications which cleared up my cough in 24 hours. Apparently it was a really bad flu season that year, and several of his patients had ended up with pneumonia. Yikes.

I would ask your OB for a list of safe meds to take, and then don't be afraid to use them as long as you follow the directions. But if you're really sick, let your OB know, there may be something stronger you can (and should) take.

Everything worked out fine in the end. My daughter is now 21 months old and she was born on schedule with no issues or complications.

I hope this helps, and I hope you feel better soon!

I totally understand your anxiety. Colds are extremely common during pregnancy though.
There are many ways that you can help your body get on the mend w/o having to take medications too.
For instance, just using a Netti Pot can help tremendously! It's totally natural--you're just using saline to "flush" out your sinuses a bit. It works like a charm! Chiropractic adjustments can also work wonders & are a great way of keeping you healthy & comfortable during your pregnancy.
Taking a WHOLE FOOD prenatal (as opposed to a synthetic vitamin) is also an essential part of staying healthy during pregnancy. Any of them at the local health food store will be good quality.
Hope you feel better soon!
Dr. Robert Smith in Forks Twp near Easton is fantastic if you're out this way.

Congratulations on your pregnancy! I can understand how worried you are. When I was early in my first trimester I caught a horrible bug that I just couldn't fight off. Along with a runny nose, I was constantly coughing hard and uncontrollably.
In nine years of teaching and tons of germ exposure, I had always been able to fight off illness without meds. But I was never sicker than during my pregnancy. I had to go on two full cycles of antibiotics before I got rid of it. I was so worried that it would cause some problem for the baby.
In fact, I was spotting along with the coughing, and I was so depressed that I didn't share the news of my pregnancy with anyone but my husband. I was totally convinced I would lose the baby.
Luckily, all that worrying was for nothing. No doubt some of the drama was hormonal! My baby arrived at a healthy 8.8 pounds. He's now 10 months and the smartest, most cheerful little guy you could ever meet! I'm sure things will work out well for you too! Get lots of rest, don't hesitate to call your doctors with questions, and try to be positive :)

You can take children's cold med if you need relief, not sure if you knew that or not. I lost at 18 weeks and felt really bad, long story it was bad!!! I went on to have 3 healthy little girls. I know it's hard not to stress and preg hormones are going nuts. Make yourself a cup of hot tea if that's your thing and try to rest. I agree with the previous poster,

FYI I am with your dr, I hadn't heard a common cold having a connection with a miscarriage. Good luck and feel better!

Hi there. I can understand your anxiey given your previous miscarriage; however there is no association between colds and miscarriage, so think happy thoughts! To help with your congestion, you may want to try a Neti Pot which is available at the drugstore for about $10. It is used to deliver a saline solution through your sinuses and can help to give you relief. I am pregnant with my second child, had a cold around 20 weeks and used the neti pot--it was a lifesaver!! Best wishes for a happy pregnancy!

When I was pregnant getting extra chiropractic care at the onset of and during a cold helped decrease my symptoms and shortened the length of the cold! I don't typically take meds for anything except the occasional advil, so especially when I was pregnant I wouldn't unless absolutley necessary for sleeping and only those prescribed by my ob, or one Tylenol that he had said was okay.

I had an awful flu-type thing around 6-8 weeks of my pregnancy and my daughter was born totally healthy. I had a fever and took Tylonol to help with the fever, aches, and chills. Tylonol is perfectly fine to take all throughout pregnancy. You can use saline nasal spray to help wit the congestion. Call your OB and ask for a list of safe meds.

Here is a list of generally OK medcines to take during pregnancy. Before you take anything - ask your OB if he has a list. (If you're high risk, have high blood pressure, or liver issues he may have not allow some medications)

There really isn't a lot - I am also expecting and have a cold :( Tylenol for aches and pains staying under the recommended doses. Hot decaf tea. Sudafed is also allowed by my doctor.

As to your other concern - I've been fortunate to have three heathly babies and inevitably during each pregnancy I had a cold, flu, ect. I know it's hard not to worry, just try to stay positive and focus on getting through your first trimester.

Good luck!

Your doctor is right. Your colds the last time had nothing to do with your miscarriage.
Your anxiety is totally understandable, but try to relax, and don't fear the colds! There is nothing harmful happening in these first few weeks by your having a cold.
I was ultra mega careful too, and despite advice that certain meds were fine, I chose no relief over worrying about the drugs. Stick to tea and honey/cayenne lemon type stuff if you want to be super cautious-google natural cold remedies fro pregnancy and stay away form weird herbs.
You'll be fine!
