I was just wondering if it is really unusual for a 6 yr old to be wetting the bed on an almost daily basis. I would appreciate anyones thoughts on this. Thanks! :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for all the wonderful advice. I'm definitely going to talk to his doctor about it and maybe try the no pull-up thing. Since we are already getting up all night long to feed the baby, this may be a good time to start trying to get him up to go potty in the middle of the night. Again- Thanks and God bless.--K. :)

As a young girl, I wet the bed all of the time until I was about 10. I did not find out until I was an adult that the reason is that I had allergies and Mom gave me Benadryl which just knocks me out. So I literally did not wake up when I had to go to the bathroom. Are there any meds involved? Could that be the root cause?

Good luck!

I think there are many in your shoes. How distressing for your son... Bedwetting can have both physical and emotional sources. Emotional from the persepective of recent changes; i.e. school, home, friends, etc. Is he having any distressing issues with these?

If not, there is alot they can do for the physical aspect. Some behavioral changes, no liquids after 6pm. After he has been checked out by his PED, there are also alarms that trigger before they wet the bed. Check into these. These can transform the child's life. My sister went thru this and suffered tremendously. Good Luck!

Hi, they say it can be genetic. Best thing is not to drink after 6 or 7pm AND to either wake your child a couple times in the night to go to the bathroom OR set an alarm for him or her to wake and go. Definitely talk to your Pediatrician about it since it can be other factors. Good luck!!

Your 6 year old could be a really deep sleeper. I hate to admit this but I peed the bed periodically until I was 14 years old. I went to a urologist in my 20's and he asked if I ever peed the bed. I told him I did up until I was 14 years old. He told me that he wasn't surprised because my urethra was the size of a 9 year olds. So, it could be something medical with your 6 year old or it could be just that he/she is a deep sleeper. I wouldn't worry about it.

Hi K.,
I never personally had this problem, (my daughter is now 15 1/2 and have another one on the way), but a co-worker of mine did have it. Her daughter wet the bed every night until she had her adnoid and tonsils out. We never knew that ear problems could cause bed-wetting. It's very common now. My daughter also had her adnoids and tonsils out, but for different reasons. My co-workers daughter never wet the bed again after that day she had them out. You may want to ask your Dr. or take her to an ear, nose and throat specialist to rule that out. Or look up some info on it over the internet. It was very interesting how the ears are connected to everything else in the body. I just saw something on the news last night 90% of infants who died with SIDS had inner ear problems! Check it out anyway.

My nephew is 8 and is just starting to grow out of consistant bed wetting. He still wears pull-ups to bed. My brother and SIL did lots of research and spoke to several doctors, and, unfortunately, there was no magic pill. I think it's more common than we think, so hang in there and goodluck!

I have a daughter the same age with the same problem. She sleeps so soundly that she has no concept she's got to go, or even that she has gone. I spoke to the pediatrician and he said that technically the hormone that tells your body to stop having to go at night doesn't even start producing until age 7, so they don't even diagnose it as a problem until then. With that being said, it doesn't make the clean up any easier! What we do is wake her up to go when we are heading to bed around 11pm (most of the time she's 1/2 asleep through the process and doesn't remember it in the morning) and then she is good for the night. We were doing the pull-ups until she was about 6 and then I just couldn't help but wonder how sanitary it was for her to be sleeping in so much pee every night.

One thing that the pediatrician stressed was not to put the pressure on her, because biologically there is probably nothing that she can do about it. The waking her up thing has worked well for us because now she doesn't feel outdone by her 4 year old brother who was wearing underpants to bed waayyyy before she was.

Oh, I was a bed wetter right thru to 6th grade (& occasionally after!). I beleive it's just genetic. The only thing that helped was making sure I didn't drink anything after 6p...but that is no small task!!!!

I know the frustration it may cause, having this situation, not to mention how your son feels. I have a 12 year old grand daughter who is still having a bed wetting problem. My daughter tried everything, and one thing that kinda works when it is consistant, is waking her up, or at least walking her to the toilet, even if she was sleeping, helped. And making sure that she didn't have anything to drink or any sugarey products to eat at least 3 hours before she went to bed. She also makes sure she has gone to the bathroom before she lays down. She puts a plastic liner on the mattress too. Now, this is helpfull if it is consistant, and in my grand daughters case, that is not always so, cause my daughter works at night, and then my granddaughter forgets, and sometimes gets in my daughters bed, waiting for her to get home, and of course she pees the bed, cause she didn't follow the rules and precausions. But when the granddaughter does follow them, she is less likely to have the problem. They say she will probably grow out of it when she gets her period, and then it will stop. For boys, well, who knows. I have a 26 year who walks in his sleep and pees on any thing still. Especially if he had a lot of fluids to drink. I had a brother who peed the bed till he was 16 years old. He used to sleep with his cloths off, cause he didn't want them to get wet, and he would put a rubber sheet under the sheet.
So, I guess it happens to many people.
Good luck.

Hey K.:

4 boys ! Wow, hands and heart are full huh ?!!

My son slept with pullups until he was 8 or so. I just put a rubber liner over the matress and then a washable mat under the sheet. He was also responsible for helping me change, wash and remake the bed.

He is the oldest and also had 4 siblings younger than him.

He's now almost 15 and that time has flown by and I had forgotten about it until I saw your request.

Hang in there cause someday you'll be dealing with trips to the mall, girls and driving.........when did he get this old ?

Smiles-
W.

my mom always said "kids won't go to college wetting the bed" this held to be true for me... i wet the bed until i was 13... also if you think it might be something deeper then you can always try seeing a urologist if your peditrician isn't helpful
