6 Week Old Who Won't Stop Crying...Ever

My newborn daughter is going on 6 weeks old and won't stop crying. Most of the time holding and snuggling her helps during the daytime. During bedtime though she just screams from her bed. I change her, nurse her until she falls asleep, and bam! 15 minutes later she's up howling again. Nothing I do seems to calm her and generally she cries herself hoarse and is exhausted by midnight. After she finally falls asleep she will sleep for a good 5 hour stretch. I just want to make her happy and nothing we seem to do works. We swaddle her, take her in the car, I lay next to her but none of it seems to work. My other two children were not like this and I am going out of my mind trying to figure out how to fix this. The other night I was crying at midnight because I was so exhausted from just trying to get her calm. I have to return to work in a couple of weeks and I just want to try to figure this out to try and make my transition to work a little easier.

What can I do next?

Does she have any type of reflux or ear problems? A friend of mine was going through this and it took a long time to diagnose. What they ended up doing was putting the baby to sleep in the car seat and putting that in the crib. It seemed to instantly help the child sleep better and stop the crying. The position of the car seat kept the childs head elevated enough that the baby didn't have anymore reflux or ear problems. I would say give this a try. What do you have to lose.

You said you swaddled your infant, but did you do it tightly enough? Try again and again with her arms across her chest and wrapped tightly with a blanket lying flat on her back.

This worked for me for my great grandson.

Good luck

Hi- since you have had children before, you definitely know this isn't "normal". I think mentioning it to your pediatrician would be a good thing. Like the last person mentioned, reflux is a problem with many kids. Have you tried elevating the head of the crib? Does she do better when positioned upright like in a bouncy or car seat? Lastly, it sounds like you would benefit from a helper- can someone else take your daughter one or two nights a week so that you can catch up on your sleep at least a little? I know with nursing it can be hard, but your health is so important too!

My daughter had the same problem, even during the daytime from age 2 days until 4 1/2 months. Through trial and error, we figured out the following formula for her: Swaddle her tightly with her arms placed at her sides. Put a pacifier in her mouth, and prop the blanket around it so it stays in. Put her in the baby swing (with blankets propped around her if she is too small). Put the swing on the high setting. Place the swing in a dark room with a machine that makes white noise or put her in the laundry room with the dryer on.

When we did this, after about 20 minutes she would go to sleep. Then she would generally stay asleep for a whole nap. At night, I would move her into her bassinet after about two hours, and she would continue to sleep.

At age 4 1/2 months she became more normal, although at age 2 now, she still doesn't get to sleep easily. Good luck - you'll get through it! Remember - everything passes with time.

E., You mentioned you are nursing... It could be a dairy allergy, or another allergy, passed through your breastmilk. Our 5 month old was having bleeding in her bowel movements (much different), but after lots of tests and questions, we determined it was a dairy allergy, from my diet. All of the doctors said colic-like symptoms are commonly associated with allergies in infants, passed through breastmilk. I adjusted my diet accordingly and she's been fine ever since... I also have a 3 year old and a 2 year old, both of which were nursed for around 6 months and had no problems and no allergies at all. Just a little side note, the doctor said most infants outgrow the allergies so we should be okay to give her dairy when she's 1, like her siblings. Good luck, this all sounded very familiar....

All babies have acid reflux. For some it bothers them more than others. Have you thought about getting her on some Zantac? My DD had it, and she never spit up. It was just burning her inside.
