We did a family portrait and they knew about it because they were in it. What they didn't know, is when we went out to eat, we had invited old friends of theirs that were at their wedding. That was the coolest to see them re-connect after so many years.

If the whole family will be together to celebrate, hire a photographer to take a beautiful "family portrait".

We did this when my grandparents celebrated their 50th in October. The grandchildren all chipped in and hired a photographer for two hours. During that time, she took a giant family photo and TONS of candids and portraits. It was not as expensive as we thought it would be. We did not purchase a "package", but paid for her time as well as the CD and 3 large prints for my grandparents.

The LOVED it!

The Modern & Traditional gift for 50 years is gold so you can either
get them each some type of gold piece of jewelry like a watch for your
dad & a bracelet for his mom.

Or just think "gold tone".

Gold flats for mom.

Golden tees for Dad if he golfs.

Golden colored shirts, scarves.

Gold tone clock for their living room w/a small badge you engrave & stick
ont he back.

A certificate for a dinner out.

Tickets to a play they might both enjoy.

Golden framed pic of the entire family.

I did this as a Christmas gift, but would be great for an anniversary too! My grandparents went and had their picture taken for their 50th. I took the picture I got of them and one my mom got me of their wedding day and had a holographic picture made using the two. I arrived better than I imagined because they were in the same pose for both pictures so the image switched back and forth beautifully of their wedding day and 50th. I put it in a nice gold frame and gave it to them at the family Christmas party. Everybody loved the picture and when people see it for the first time they do double and triple takes. Here is the website to the place I used: http://magicpicturecompany.com/

Another idea is a mosaic picture. Have a current picture of them and have it made up of multiple pictures from their last 50 years together. There are lots of websites that offer this!

forget the gimmicky gifts....go for something of personal interest.

or a scrapbook, memory dvd, etc.

or a weekend away.

or just a huge family/friends gathering.

we've closed out 2 estates in our family in the past few years, & all of that gimmicky stuff just gets pitched. :(

We had a party for my parents. We did a picture - large frame - one with their wedding photo and a current picture of them....then we had matting done and people signed around the picture.

For their 40th - it was a surprise and we had a memory book done. We wrote to everyone they knew and asked for a memory and a picture....it was AWESOME!!! Almost 16 years later and people are STILL talking about it.

If they don't want "stuff" - get them a gift card to something. My parents neighbors got together for their 50th (at the party we had) and gave them a gift certificate to a hot air balloon ride - it was a full day package. They sooo enjoyed it.

It would help if you told us more about them - what they like to do and their ages..do they travel? do they garden? what hobbies do they have?

I've seen several things done and appreciated.

A nice family portrait.

A framed picture of them at their wedding, along with a print out of the lyrics to "their" song.

A picture of them at their wedding that was sent to one of those places that does a painting of it. WOW! It was spectacular.

A new garden installed...complete with flowers, fountain and bench to sit on to enjoy it.

Nice rocking chairs for the front or back porch.

A bench made with all the children and grandchildren's names and hand prints (even the adult hand prints)

A ring and lapel pin made with the kids and grandkids birthstones.

A DVD made of pictures of the family accompanied by music of their era.
