5 Yo Producing a Huge Amount of Urine

I got a call from school today. Apparently my 5 yo missed the toilet completely and went to the bathroom so much that it leaked through the floor down the ceiling and into another bathroom. They said it took 1/2 a roll of paper towels to clean it up. The really odd thing is that he continued to do it every 15-20 minutes for a majority of the day. This has never happened before and I am a little concerned. He says he's fine - drinks the same amount everyday and had barely anything to drink before school this am. Any ideas?

So What Happened?

hi everyone and thanks so much for your responses. So it turns out he's drinking a ton of water at school -- we're monitoring it. Took him to the ped - doesn't have UTI or diabetes -- ended up having strep! He's on an antibiotic for the next week. We got our prescription at Target -- they have the coolest way to administer and my little guy delights in doing it himself. the bottle has a hole large enough for a syringe. Flip the bottle upside down and fill up the syringe! Sucks it in his mouth and cleans it off in the sink.

Thank you for all of your kindness and support!

Good morning
I would call your pediatrician and just make sure he is OK with his kidneys...have them test his urine just in case there is something going on. Knowing my sons, maybe he just held his urine for a long time ( they always do!) and then it seems like a lot. Pour 2 cups of water on the floor or more, and see what it looks like. And if you have lousy floors it'd leak down surely. BUT any urinary symptoms can signal more serious problems too so DO have the pediatrician test his urine , for sugar in the urine too especially. Hate to say the word, but I had a friend whose 4 yr old son was peeing a lot in the summer, and because she was a nurse she had him tested and he had juvenile diabetes. I'm sure not, but you'll feel better if you go. good luck :)

Sometimes increased urine production can be a sign of something like Diabetes. Probably worth a call to the MD

Yup, definitely go see his pediatrician and ask for a urine check for ketones, a sign of type 1 diabetes. They can do that in the office from a urine sample. Also do a blood test to check his blood glucose levels which should probably be somewhere between 70 and 120. If they have a glucometer in the office, they might be able to give you instant results from a finger prick drop of blood. Otherwise they may draw blood and send lab results later.

Course, maybe your son just forgot to pee when he got up yesterday and was too full by the time he got to school!

We'll hope for the latter, but don't wait. Even if it's just a urinary tract infection (UTI), you'll want to get it treated right away.

Good luck! If it should turn out to be diabetes, feel free to contact me, my daughter was diagnosed three years ago but is doing very well with it today.

Please take him to the doctor and have his blood sugar tested for diabetes - frequent urination is one symptom. But hopefully this is not the case - good luck!

Please call your pediatrician immediately and have him evaluated before he ends up dehydrated or with a severe electrolyte imbalance. This is not the kind of thing you should seek lay advice about. The good news is he feels well. Good Luck. Hope he's OK.

Absolutely check his blood sugar if you can! Polyuria is a sign of diabetes. Smell his breath to see if there is a fruity odor and watch his liquid intake. When diabetes presents kids are usually extra thirsty and hungry. Also look for fatigue and weight loss.

My girlfriends 5 yr old did this as well. they took her to the doctor and it turns out that she was extremely constipated. The constipation was filling up all the room in there and making her pee constantly.

Hi L.,

I would make an appointment with your pediatrician to check it out. There are certain things that can cause kids to pee alot (diabetes). This seems very sudden though so there could be something else going on. Concern is that he could get very dehydrated.

Best to get it checked out!

Hi L.,

I would definately call the pediatrician immediately. There are endocrine disorders which have large amounts of dilute urine as a symptom. DI (diabetes insipidous) is one example which quite serious but can be treated.

God Bless.

Excessive urination is one of the early signs of diabetes. I'd bring him to see the pediatrician as soon as possible.

Have him checked for a UTI, I know at least with little ones that if they are peeing thru their diapers, soaking the bed, etc. that is the most likely cause. You might try having him soak in a tub with just warm water and baking soda in the meanwhile, that helps with urinary irritation.
